South Dakota State University is seeking a dependable, skilled, and service-minded individual to join our team as the Physical Plant Manager for General Services. In this role, you'll support campus operations by coordinating daily work assignments, supervising staff, and ensuring facilities projects and repairs are completed efficiently. Facilities and Services is the internal department overseeing the growth, maintenance, repair and changes of the facilities, infrastructure and grounds of campus and satellite locations. Work performed in the General Services area includes building maintenance work, setting up for events, material handling and moving, freight delivery, assembling office furniture/cubicle partitions, general carpentry work, locksmith work, door and door hardware repairs and maintenance, and asbestos abatement.
This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
Job Responsibilities: Directs operations of general services group to meet the needs of the campus in an efficient, economical and safe fashion.
- Responsible to supervise staff and assign work.
- Participates in project, repair or renovation planning.
- Monitors and works with contractors and vendors.
- Perform a variety of maintenance, abatement, deliveries, locksmith work, event setups, moves, and other work that is part of general services' duties.
- Manages master key system.
- Interface with campus departments.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Methods, practices, tools and equipment used for building maintenance
- Master key system
- Door hardware lock installation/repair, electronic card access, and auto door operators
- Moving practices
- Event setup
- Asbestos abatement
- Supervisor, customer services, and teamwork techniques and best practices
Skill & Ability to:
- Read and understand construction drawings and general plans
- Use routine maintenance/construction hand tools
- Demonstrate mechanical aptitude
- Work safely
- Operate equipment such as forklifts, general construction equipment, and hand moving equipment (or ability to learn)
- Perform locksmith work and maintenance/repairs of door systems, electronic access, and auto openers
- Communicate clearly and provide excellent customer service
- Lift up to 50 pounds, bend, kneel, climb, and work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Work in a fast paced environment, with competing needs and unscheduled work
- Work as a team member, with a positive attitude, be flexible and receptive to a variety of work
- Perform asbestos abatement (training provided)
- Be willing to learn new things
Required License: Valid driver's license upon hire. Asbestos Abatement certifications within one year of hire: Contractor/Supervisor, Inspector, Management Planner; medical clearance to wear a respirator
Comments: This position is classified as Physical Plant Manager I.

Monday - Friday: 8am-5pm or 7am-3:30pm depending on coverage needed and other staff's schedules.
Weekends and evenings/nights: On-call rotation required for lock and door issues, for freight/delivery emergencies, and for support of general emergencies. Planned after hours coverage for occasional event requirements (graduation, semester start and ending events, surplus sale).
