Pipefitter Jobs in District of Columbia
A Pipefitter or Steamfitter is an essential figure in the construction industry, who primarily installs, assembles, fabricates, maintains, and repairs mechanical piping systems. These systems carry fuel, chemicals, water, steam, and air in heating, cooling, lubricating, and other process piping systems. Pipefitters also apply their skills in blueprint reading to interpret project plans and specifications to determine the type, size, and quantity of pipes required. To ensure safety and efficiency, Pipefitters must comply with local and national plumbing codes. They also need to have excellent problem-solving skills, precision, and physical stamina, as the job often involves heavy lifting.
Before becoming a Pipefitter, a person may start their career as a Plumber, a Welder, or a Construction Laborer. In terms of qualifications, a high school diploma is often the minimum requirement. However, most pipefitters undergo several years of training, either as an apprentice under a seasoned pipefitter or through a vocational school. A Pipefitter is expected to earn certification in their field, like the Journeyman Pipefitter certification, or the Certified Pipe Welding (CPW) certification, depending upon the area of expertise. Additionally, Pipefitters must obtain necessary licensure, which varies by state and may require a passing score on an exam.
