PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, maintain, modify, repair, and install heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment throughout the district. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in district facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or GED

Certification / License:

EPA Refrigerant certification, Technician Type I and II

Preferred Texas State HVAC License

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the

maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

Knowledge of electricity sufficient to troubleshoot and repair complex electrical control circuits.

Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and recommend repair procedures.

Ability to analyze building heating and air conditioning equipment and recommend modifications

to achieve better operation or energy savings.

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Electrical measuring and testing equipment; welding equipment;

hand tools; power tools; hoist; plumbing tools and equipment including pipe bender, propane

torch; hand tools; power tools; heavy equipment including forklift, trencher, backhoe; light truck

or van

Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting;

work in tiring and uncomfortable positions

Motion: Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist

flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; frequent driving

Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis

Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; may work on

rooftops; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and

materials, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts;

work around gas lines; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; may work

irregular and prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress

Regular attendance is an essential function

Minimum Experience:

Four years at the journeyman work level and progressive experience in the installation,

maintenance and repair of air conditioning, air handling, and control systems; or an equivalent

combination of training and experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop equipment.
  • Install new heating and air conditioning systems and components.
  • Relocate and expand existing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
  • Fabricate, assemble and install ductwork and piping according to specifications and code.
  • Wire and connect motors, compressor, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment including changing filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
  • Perform duct cleaning and air quality testing as needed.
  • Receive and complete work orders in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Repair vent hoods, labs, freezers, walk-in coolers, washing machines, and dryers as needed.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Assist other technicians within the maintenance department as needed or directed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Attend all required district and department meetings and trainings.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Abide by State and Federal laws, District policies, campus expectations and Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
