The ISL Transportation Team is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Traffic Signals Engineer/Designer to join the team in Edmonton, AB. Working within the ISL Transportation group is an opportunity for involvement in a significant range of project types including signal systems for large Highway and Freeway conversion projects to small municipal signalling systems and non-vehicular modes signaling systems (rail, bicycles, transit). Your role will be working directly with our municipal clients and with other ISL project managers leading their urban or rural transportation design projects.

A Little About You

Your cover letter must demonstrate:

  • What has you interested in ISL Engineering?

Your resume should show us:

  • Degree in Civil, Electrical or related degree
  • P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng.) - applicant must be registered with APEGA or eligible to transfer membership to APEGA OR an EIT with extensive experience.
  • Progressively responsible experience in traffic signal engineering and/or design
  • Demonstrable traffic operations, traffic signal and/or illumination systems experience.
  • Significant experience with traffic operational analysis software. (Synchro, Simtraffic, Sidra).
  • Experience with illumination analysis software (AGi32).
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D (for the purposes of reviewing, checking designs).
  • Experience with standards/guidelines for provincial and national traffic operations, traffic control devices, illumination and traffic signal systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Bonus points for:

  • Signal system experience for non-vehicular modes (transit, bicycles, rail interconnection).
  • Road safety experience.
  • RSP, PTOE, M. Sc., M.Eng and/or PMP designation.

A Little More About the Role

This role will be highly sought after for technical expertise by Transportation Engineering and Design groups internal to ISL and for our clients throughout Northern Alberta. Working collaboratively across the organization this position will make the following valuable contributions:

  • Liaise and communicate effectively with clients and internal team members (Engineers, Project Managers and other technical staff) in the design and specification development of traffic signals systems and illumination systems.
  • Ensure that engineering deliverables are complaint with applicable regulations, standards, procedures and uphold to engineering best practices.
  • Work under minimal supervision during design, tender and construction phases of projects.
  • Lead the design, specifications and tenders for client-specific traffic signal control and illumination systems with support from other ISL staff.
  • Planning and operational analysis of intersections and traffic signals.
  • Complete warrant evaluations for traffic signals, illumination, left turn operation, etc.
  • Evaluate client requests and provide design options during preliminary and detailed design phases of projects.
  • Review and provide concise feedback on contractor queries and submissions during tender and construction phases of projects.
  • Direct contractors to ensure successful project commissioning.
  • Prepare other types of traffic operational projects including road safety reviews, traffic reviews, traffic impact assessments and other traffic engineering assessments for development and municipal clients.
  • Successful execution of projects to meet client's needs, on time and within budget
  • Work collaboratively with Transportation Planning, Urban and Rural Design Construction groups.
