Primary Purpose:

Under general supervision, perform skilled work in construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings, and structures throughout the district. To help maintain the physical school plant in a safe and attractive condition for operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma preferred
  • Valid Texas driver's license (Meet eligibility requirements to drive a district vehicle)
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to measure and performance mathematical computations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to estimate materials
  • Minimum of five years of successful experience in repair, remodeling and new construction

Major Responsibilities & Duties:

Maintenance and Repair:

  • Perform the carpentry duties necessary to construct and maintain in good repair building woodwork and equipment.
  • Plan and complete construction of cabinets, shelves, and partitions from initial layout to assembly using oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
  • Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  • Fabricate, repair, and replace doors, windows, flooring, ceiling materials, glass, building hardware, screens, plastic laminate, etc.
  • Construct and repair outdoor equipment including playground equipment, fences, gates, bleachers, etc.
  • Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
  • Repair windows, furniture, door locks, closers, and hardware as necessary. Construct or remodel walls, partitions, and portable buildings as necessary.
  • Replace, repair, and finish furniture, cabinets, fixtures, woodwork, etc.
  • Assist with the installation and moving of portable buildings, including constructing steps, installing underpinning, etc.
  • Receive and complete work orders.
  • Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and remove scraps and lumber as needed.
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.

Safety:

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Demonstrate acceptable work habits including teamwork, initiative and dependability.
  • Report to work on time each day
  • Perform any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as needed basis.
