Equipment Operator I- Streets**POSITION DESCRIPTION:Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to operate medium equipment and machinery necessary for the maintenance of streets, utilities, municipal property and co lection of solid waste. Employees in this classification perform a l work according to established safety standards, codes and regulations applicable to the work. Employees in this classification perform at journey level as it relates to the assigned job function, and can perform tasks independently, though work remains subject to review and inspection during and upon completion of assigned tasks.SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.- Operates complex and heavy mechanical equipment, a wide variety of construction equipment and tools, and a variety of specialized specific tools and equipment, e.g., jackhammer, salt spreader, asphalt apparatus, core drill, hole hog, rock and air drill, pipe breaker.- Performs skilled maintenance and repairs on a variety of structures, facilities, equipment, streets, drainage areas, sidewalks and other City property in one or more of the skilled and semi-skilled disciplines.- Operates a wide variety of light and medium equipment and machinery, e.g., automobile, pickup truck, dump truck, roller, bucket truck, sky track, fork lift, back hoe, lawn mower, tractor, street sweeper, track drilling equipment, knuckle boom refuse loading equipment, rear loading garbage truck, paving machines and roller equipment.- Operates various standard hand-held manual, electrical, and gas powered tools and equipment, e.g., hammer, shovel, rake, screw drivers, wrenches, digging bar, chainsaw, chemical sprayer leaf blower, weed eater, hedge trimmers, edger. ? Cleans, maintains and adjusts tools, equipment and machinery, e.g., maintains fluids, performs general servicing and completes minor repairs.- May perform a variety of routine custodial and grounds maintenance tasks, e.g., edging, mowing, trimming and waste removal.- Provides assistance to other departments as necessary; may perform all tasks routinely assigned to Maintenance Worker I and II.- May be required to work overtime and/or participate on a 24 hour on-call schedule.- Performs related duties as assigned.SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL).- Knowledge of machinery and ability to perform basic repairs.- Excellent work history and attendance record.WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe following is intended to provide a general sense of the work environment and physical demands that may be required of the position: ? Ability to perform reaching, lifting, pu ling and pushing of 50 lbs.- Ability to perform labor intensive skilled work which may include exposure to difficult working conditions, e.g., extreme heat or cold.- Must be able to speak and hear clearly.- Must be able to grasp and feel objects in order to operate tools, equipment and machinery.- Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, reach, crouch, and kneel regularly in order to manage tools, equipment and inventory.- May work in confined spaces. ? Works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to loud noises.- Exposed to vibration, mechanical oils and fumes, as well as potential y hazardous chemicals
