General Mechanic

Job Title: General Mechanic

Classification: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt

Reports To: Director of Physical Plant & Projects

Job Summary/Objective: The General Maintenance position performs as part of a multi-craft team, repairs, troubleshooting, installation, preventive maintenance, furniture installation, fire system testing, painting, and general service requests from our employees. Aids with construction, renovation, and capital projects.

Position Type/Expected Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 am 3:30 pm; On-call work and some weekend work will be required

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Commercial/Industrial/Maintenance experience required, mechanically inclined and self-motivated.
  • Problem solving skills
  • Conduct preventive/predictive maintenance processes on equipment like ice machines, air handlers, air filters, pumps, motors and other non-automated equipment.
  • Provide plumbing repairs/installations/troubleshooting on black iron, copper, PVC and CPVC systems. Repair items such as flush valves, faucets, toilets and urinals.
  • Ability to work on ladders, lift and move heavy equipment up to 100 lbs and perform in awkward situations and positions.
  • Knowledgeable of fire systems including testing of fire suppression systems, smoke detectors, heat detectors, tamper switches, flow switches, wet and dry pre-action systems.
  • Specify and procure materials and supplies for new installations and repairs
  • Ability to work overtime when required
  • Share 24-hour on-call service
  • Snow removal of sidewalks, stairs and parking lots

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Virginia Driver's license
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED, completion
  • Ability to read technical documents and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must have basic knowledge/ ability of Windows base computer systems and Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to communicate with other departments in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willing to get trade (electrical, plumbers, HVAC) cards

Work Environment: Both indoor and outdoor environments in varying types of weather

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to navigate large, rural campus
  • Ability to work from a ladder
  • Extended periods of sitting/ standing required
  • Physical Demands (Heavy): Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible up to 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work is both inside and outside
  • Subject to hazards from noise, dust, electrical shock, and falls
  • Knowledge required in various hand and power tools.
