Position Summary:
The Estimator Associate works directly with leaders in the specialty contracting industry to learn how to perform material takeoffs, prepare estimates and proposals, and otherwise assist the branch in their efforts to secure profitable work. The goal of the Associate role is to help new employees develop the skills they need to become a successful Estimator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Learn to interpret specifications and perform material take-offs from construction drawings
Participate in pre-award meetings to clarify scope, specifications, and job site conditions
Learn to summarize the takeoff and note job conditions that may affect labor productivity
Learn to solicit material and subcontract pricing from vendors to incorporate into the estimate
Learn to request bonds and bond pricing from the corporate office when needed
Learn to prepare cost estimates utilizing MIKE estimating software, field take-offs, or other software the company may choose to utilize
Learn to prepare material and application submittals when required by contract conditions, or when necessary to clear up ambiguous specifications or when otherwise desirable
Learn to prepare a project schedule when required by a specification or company policy
Upon award of the subcontract, assist in preparing the Material Requirements and Foreman's Work Order, attend preconstruction meetings with an experienced Estimator and otherwise support the hand-off to the construction team
Learn to assist Account Managers with job control setup and cost codes
Learn how to track & understand labor productivity, material costs, direct and indirect costs, taxes, and margin standards to ensure accurate estimates
Learn to work closely with the responsible Account Manager on the bids to ensure bid conditions and requirements will be met
Assist in maintaining customer and bid databases for assigned customers in Salesforce
Participate in the company's Continuous Improvement Process
Support the company's Environmental Health & Safety Program
Required Skills and Abilities:
Exhibit a spirit of cooperation and teamwork with all members of the organization
Ability to prioritize tasks and work under time constraints to meet deadlines
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
Strong math aptitude, in algebra and geometry skills
Ability to learn and follow applicable policies and procedures
Valid driver's license and the ability to travel within assigned territory as necessary
Required Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent
Travel: Up to 10% overnight travel
