Under the general supervision of a Caltrans Electrical Supervisor, the Caltrans Electrician I position is responsible for and may help higher level electricians repair, replace, or install electrical and electronic devices associated with state facilities. The incumbent may also assist with personal hoist the installation or repair of signs, if properly qualified. The position requires the operation of light duty trucks, personal hoists, forklifts, and trailers; Class C drivers license is required. The incumbent with a commercial license may be required to drive larger trucks and operate equipment such as cranes. Job requires heavy manual labor, which may include lifting 60 lbs or more and working around moving traffic. The incumbent may be assigned night time work. With the exception of a small percentage of time indoors doing paperwork, this position requires outdoor work in all types of climatic conditions including extreme heat and cold/dampness. Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and after hours emergency call backs when needed.

For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. This position requires visual and color acuity adequate to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, willingness to work at odd hours, be available for day or night calls, stay abreast of current technological changes in the fields of electricity and electronics, work up to 550 feet above pavement or water, work in the midst of traffic, and have the ability to withstand working under adverse (e.g., cold, wet, windy) weather conditions.

New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.
