Department : Center for Advanced Training & Apprenticeships (CATA)
General Statement of Job
The CATA Heavy Equipment Operator Trainer is responsible for training and mentoring individuals in the operation and maintenance of various types of heavy machinery, such as bulldozers, excavators, and loaders. Ensures trainees understand safety protocols, efficient operation techniques, and routine maintenance procedures. Develops and delivers comprehensive training programs to prepare operators for real-world industrial projects.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Instructs Heavy Equipment Operator classes for students of various proficiency levels.
- Implements curriculum aligned with industry standards to ensure student success.
- Evaluates and optimizes instructional materials and delivery methods.
- Motivates students to attend class, learn, and achieve career goals.
- Creates and monitors individualized educational plans to support timely completion.
- Maintains student and class records, including attendance and performance.
- Tracks and reports student attendance and academic progress.
- Completes and submits required course documentation promptly.
- Informs Coordinators of students falling behind in attendance or academic performance.
- Refers students to support services as needed.
- Maintains a productive learning environment and manages classroom behavior.
- Communicates respectfully and constructively with students, staff, and peers.
- Conducts sponsor-teacher conferences as needed.
- Travels to training sites within the College district.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Associates Degree required; a degree in Construction, Industrial Technology, or a related field preferred.
- One (1) year of direct industry experience operating heavy equipment required.
- Experience training or mentoring in a hands-on setting preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks within deadlines.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Ability to work evenings/weekends and travel within the College district.
- Proficient in reading safety manuals, operation guides, and procedural documents.
- Ability to write reports and instructional content clearly and professionally.
- Ability to effectively present technical content to diverse groups.
- Strong problem-solving skills and practical application of instructions in varied formats.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College and CATA.
Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
- Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
- Possession of or ability to obtain industry-recognized certifications relevant to heavy equipment operation and safety (e.g., NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations, OSHA 10/30) preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
