Deputy Director Transportation/City Traffic Engineer

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The purpose of this class within the organization is to oversee, manage, and support overall operation of the traffic engineering division within the City. This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.

Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
  • Investigates complaints and requests regarding traffic control issues; determines and communicates resolutions/actions. Reviews construction plans for adequate traffic control devices and operations.
  • Provides service to customers by answering traffic related questions, relating pertinent information, making referrals, and assuring appropriate follow-through and/or resolution. Provides technical information to other City departments, consultants, private developers, engineers, contractors, and the public.
  • Oversees traffic engineering studies; reviews of traffic impact studies; prepares and reviews modifications of streets and roadways to improve traffic/pedestrian flow and safety; coordinates CCTV and streetlights functions. Collaborates with managers, supervisors, co-workers, citizens, and others; maintains confidentiality. Oversees calculations, design, speed limit analysis, signal timings, and vehicular crash reports and investigation of traffic hazards.

Additional Duties :

  • Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering or closely related field.
  • Requires over ten (10) years as a traffic engineer or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must have a professional Engineering License to practice in the State of Tennessee or have ability within twelve (12) months to obtain registration in Tennessee.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
