Senior Associate Traffic Engineer (For Current DPW Traffic Division Employees Only)

Description

Under general supervision, responsible for major traffic engineering function related to the design, selection, and placement of traffic structures and appurtenances.

Examples of Duties

  • Plan and supervise the work of a moderately large group of subordinate engineers and drafting technicians engaged in performing fundamental traffic engineering design studies and analyses of transportation problems related to the design, selection, and placement of traffic structures and appurtenances.
  • Prepare plans and policies for performing the work.
  • Assign, review, and approve the work of subordinates.
  • Advise and provide instruction on the more difficult phases of the work.
  • Train subordinates and new staff members.
  • Evaluate existing statistical traffic data and arrange for the collection of pertinent information in order to develop solutions to traffic control and design problems.
  • Formulate specific solutions to traffic problems and evaluate the effectiveness of actions taken as a result of those recommendations.
  • Prepare and modify, from a traffic engineering perspective, plans and layouts related to the design of traffic structures and appurtenances.
  • Investigate and prepare reports on the more difficult and specialized phases of traffic design and control activities.
  • Consult with representatives of other City departments, public and private utilities, and other traffic agencies.
  • Represent the department in the coordination of efforts and responsibilities in major traffic engineering projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required):

  • Bachelor's degree in traffic engineering or a related field of study.
  • Three years of experience in traffic and related engineering activities which has involved making transportation studies in urban areas and design of traffic and transportation structures including two years which has been in a supervisory capacity.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.
