As a Motor Equipment Operator I you will be physically active throughout the day with a variety of duties! This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing City streets sidewalks drainage systems and adjoining vegetation. Duties include patching asphalt roads sealing cracks repairing curbs maintaining and repairing sidewalks (which involves cement and asphalt work) and sweeping streets. Winter duties include plowing and removing snow on streets and sidewalks sanding and salting roads and repairing damage caused by snowplows. Employee will operate moderate to heavy motor equipment service and make minor repairs to equipment operate some light equipment and perform unskilled or semi-skilled laboring tasks. Applicants must have a working knowledge of traffic and safety rules and accident prevention. Note: This position is subject to recall and stand-by duty and being placed on stand-by for pending severe weather during non-regular working hours weekends and holidays. This position should be able to respond within 60 minutes depending on weather conditions to staff the work site. There is a considerable amount of overtime during winter months. In addition this position is subject to federal commercial drive license (CDL) drug and alcohol requirements. Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education/experience. A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes endorsement required; Level I Roads Scholar Certificate and experience in making minor repairs to equipment are both desired. Pay and Benefits: During the 6-month probationary period the pay rate for this position is $20.06 per hour. Upon successful completion of the probationary period this position will move to the regular pay schedule which consists of pay steps and hourly rates ranging from $20.79- $24.79 per hour depending on experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform maintenance and repair of roads. This includes patching asphalt roads; sealing cracks; and repairing curbs.
Maintain and repair sidewalks. This involves cement and asphalt work.
Sweep streets and sidewalks.
Plow and remove snow.
Sand and salt roads.
Assist with installation; maintenance; and repair of drainage systems.
Perform clean-up after storms to remove trees and downed vegetation from the City streets and the Ashuelot River.
Prune trees and vegetation.
Perform landscaping duties. This includes raking leaves.
Repair damage caused by snow plows. This includes repair of mailboxes; lawns; and sidewalks.
Assist with traffic control.
Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs of tools and equipment.
Possess ability to work with power tools and operate heavy equipment.
Note: Included with the power tools and heavy equipment generally used by this position are lawn mower; chain saw; jack hammer; pipe saw; cement mixer; sidewalk plow; snow blower; one-ton truck; large dump trucks; street sweeper; curb machine; asphalt roller; crack sealing equipment; brush chipper; and brush saw. Also used are pay loader and backhoe.
Note: This position is subject to stand-by duty and recall during non-regular working hours; weekends; and holidays. There is a considerable amount of overtime during winter months. ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform routine maintenance of buildings. This includes minor repairs; painting; and basic plumbing and electrical work.

A. Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
B. Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions; short correspondence; and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers; clients; and other employees of the City.
C. Computer Skills
Basic familiarity with computers; tablets; and other similar devices; ability to retrieve and send email and work with a work order system.
D. Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement; volume; and distance.
E. Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written; oral; or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
F. Certificates; Licenses; Registrations
Valid NH commercial driver's license (CDL) with air brakes endorsement required.
Level I Roads Scholar Certificate; desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position involves light to heavy physical labor. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and talk or hear. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; and depth perception.
Work Environment
The noise level is loud to very loud. This position frequently involves work in outdoor weather conditions. There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration. There is occasional exposure to high or precarious places fumes or airborne particles and chemicals. Outdoor weather conditions vary depending on the season.
