TITLE OF VACANCY: Substitute General Maintenance/Carpenter II

POSITION TYPE: Service

ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)

LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia

On an on call, as needed basis and under immediate supervision - performs varied manual semi-skilled and skilled tasks in respective areas of responsibilities of the building, electrical, and mechanical trades in the construction, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and equipment. Responsible for various carpentry tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor. Position may be utilized for general maintenance projects or emergency situations as required to meet department needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will adhere to WVBE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.

  • Observes safety precautions in carrying out assigned duties.

  • Demonstrates appropriate safety, hygiene, and health standards.

  • Demonstrates safety of work area

  • Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.

  • Attends staff meetings as scheduled.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs to all campus buildings.

  • Have knowledge of tools required.

  • Estimate materials.

  • Write reports and complete work orders consistent with duties.

  • Makes renovations and new installations which require a high level of carpentry skills.

  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans and sketches.

  • Plan, initiate and carry to completion specialized phases of general maintenance work.

  • Estimate materials and manpower needed to complete projects.

  • Coordinate work with others.

  • Perform duties in full compliance with state and county requirements.

  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position.

  • Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with this position.

  • Conducts inventory of building supplies and materials. Submits requests based on this inventory.

  • Conducts shop operations to include receiving parts and supplies and completing work orders.

  • Effectively presents information and responds to questions from administrators, staff, public, and inspectors.

  • Works individually or as a team member for other projects.

  • Be willing to be called out in emergency situations for each of the classifications held.

  • Ability to install and finish drywall and other routine maintenance and/or repair task(s).

  • Constructs wooden cabinets, shelving units and furniture from start to finish. This work is to include, but is not limited to:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and shop drawings from outside sources

  • Designing of cabinets, shelving units and furniture when required

  • Drawing and sketching shop drawings

  • Selecting proper grades of lumber, plywood, and other materials required

  • Layout, cut and assemble units using the best available methods.

  • Finishing all units including, sanding, and applying finish coats (paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers, oils, polyurethanes, etc.)

  • Installs and/or modifies drop ceiling or other commercial ceiling systems.

  • Finishes work for assigned projects, including but not limited to moldings and trim.

  • Installation of various finishing and surfacing materials

  • Installs rough framing, roof components, exterior finishes, interior finishes.

  • Maintains structures: Hang doors, install closures, locks, panic hardware.

  • Uses climbing equipment.

  • Sharpen tools.

  • Loads and unloads trucks. moves or hauls such items as supplies, office furniture, and building materials.

  • Maintain and care for campus grounds so that they are viewed as safe and attractive, as directed.

  • Prunes trees and trim hedges

  • Mows lawns with hand or power mower

  • Adjusts and repairs such equipment as lawnmowers, sprinklers, and hedge shears.

  • Shovels snow from sidewalks, and driveways, and spreads sand, salt or ashes to prevent slipping, as directed.

  • Collects and disposes of leaves and refuse, as directed.

  • Assists custodians, if directed, with keeping ground free of rubbish, tall grass, and weeks to assure a safe and attractive condition

  • Stores supplies and equipment

  • Assists in inspecting facilities on a regular basis for preventive maintenance and correcting safety hazards.

  • Assists with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks so they can be made safe as soon as possible. this includes callouts after normal working hours, when available

  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or superintendent.

Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8:

"General maintenance" means a person employed as a helper to skilled maintenance employees, and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings of a county school system.

"Carpenter II" means a person classified as a journeyman carpenter.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5.
  • Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8b. demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
  • Possess experience and/or training in any/or all job classifications identified within this job description.
  • Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Physically able to do heavy, extensive lifting and manual labor.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, licensures required by state or federal agencies in the performance of the position.

SALARY:

Hourly rate based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, F Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. On call, as needed.

EVALUATION:

Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
