Mechanical Design Engineer

This position is responsible for the mechanical design of Dynapowers power conversion products, with a strong emphasis on SolidWorks-based design of large-scale electrical equipment assemblies sheet metal components. The Mechanical Engineer will join a dynamic, cross-functional team at the forefront of multiple market segments. This role will actively contribute to product strategy and new product introductions across Dynapowers Industrial, High Power, Military, and Energy Storage divisions, working closely with other engineering disciplines to deliver innovative and manufacturable solutions.

General Responsibilities
Key participant in design projects
Performs design verification on original and/or derivative design ideas using analytical and experimental methods
Key participant in development testing, engineering analysis, qualification testing, production launch
Collaboates with necessary personnel on failure analysis investigations and engineering evaluations
Maintains product documentation (drawings and specifications)
Interacts with customers to solicit product specifications requirements, schedule expectations and budget
Knowledge of basic electrical circuits, microelectronic assembly, statistical methods, process control fundamentals and product test processes

Experience / Qualifications
A university degree required (i.e. Bachelors degree) or equivalent relevant work experience
Must be a team player able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands
Strong communication skills; oral, written and presentation

Essential Functions

  • Mechanical design of new power electronics assemblies using SolidWorks

  • Design robust mechanical systems that integrate with complex electrical layouts, optimizing for thermal performance, environmental conditions, and cost.

  • Support optimization of existing products, parts replacement, design improvements, creating a matrix of standardized product lines

  • Improve existing product lines for manufacturability and assembly efficiency using existing tooling.

  • Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, supply chain, marketing, and production teams throughout the design and development cycle.

  • Participate in and support cross-functional team meetings to ensure aligned progress on multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Interpret electrical schematics to ensure accurate and efficient mechanical layouts that support electrical functionality.

  • Support product launches by coordinating with key stakeholders including product management and sales.

Required Competencies

  • Expertise in SolidWorks 3D modeling with a focus on electrical equipment assemblies and sheet metal design.

  • Strong understanding of product design for electrical equipment, including considerations for environmental exposure and cooling/thermal management.

  • Comfortable working within a Product Data Management (PDM) system such as SolidWorks EPDM.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on shared designs with multiple team members while managing version control and design intent.

  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to solve complex problems under tight timelines.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Supervisory Responsibilities None.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Based in South Burlington, VT

  • Typical office setting with occasional physical activity including walking, lifting to 20 pounds, and production floor visits.

Position Type & Travel

  • Full-time, MondayFriday

  • Occasional domestic travel required.

Required Education and Experience

  • 35 years of SolidWorks experience in a mechanical design role, particularly in the electrical or power equipment industries.

  • Hands-on experience designing and releasing products involving sheet metal fabrication, large enclosures, and thermal considerations.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and ability to apply Design For Manufacturability (DFM) principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience in the power electronics industry.

  • Working knowledge of electrical systems, including inverters, rectifiers, transformers, and control systems.

  • Experience with contract manufacturers and outsourced fabrication.

  • Experience with thermal calculation, simulation,n and mechanical analysis.

  • Training or experience with Design for Testability (DFT) and Product Data Management (PDM) systems.
