ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The Public Works Department is seeking a Building Equipment Supervisor to supervise, assign, direct, and inspect the work of crew leaders and team members in installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC and other commercial mechanical systems.

Duties include:

  • Budget and contract development/management.
  • Development and administration of preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Develop short-term and long-term capital improvement plans.
  • Project management and weekly work plans.
  • Conduct preliminary surveys of proposed projects including blueprint evaluation, costing, and material procurement.
  • Coordinate work with other department work sections.
  • Identify and implement efficiency improvements in work procedures and processes.
  • Operate electronic communications devices.
  • Create electronic reports using MS Word and Excel.

This position will be given considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.

Work hours are on second or third shift.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of:

  • HVAC equipment, systems, and controls.
  • Chillers.
  • Pumps, air compressors, and fire suppression systems.

Ability to:

  • Conduct preliminary surveys of proposed projects including cost estimates.
  • Gather budget information.
  • Monitor capital improvement programs.
  • Coordinate construction remodeling schedules with other sections.
  • Interpret blueprints and project layouts to ensure safe work practices are followed.

SALARY

Pay Range: $31.82 to $47.01 per hour.

Hiring Range: $31.82 to $38.68 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of supervisory experience in the operation and maintenance of modern refrigeration and heating equipment systems.
  • Must possess a current Universal CFC certification at time of hire.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Positions assigned to work within Police Department buildings and facilities must meet the background standards that are appropriate to non-sworn positions. The general factors for disqualification are listed here.
  • This position is subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background standards. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.
  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.

Experience with:

  • Contract management.
  • Methods, practices, tools, and materials used in HVAC operations, maintenance, and repair.
  • Supervising others.
  • Word processing, spreadsheets, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Budget procurement and contract management.
  • Building Automation Systems.
  • Pumps, air compressors, and fire suppression systems.
