The Landscape Architect plays a crucial role in shaping and maintaining the University of Texas campus landscape by collaborating closely with leadership, stakeholders, and project teams. This position provides expert guidance on landscape design, adherence to standards, requests and sustainability initiatives while supporting broader campus planning efforts. The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, communicative, and adaptable, readily accepting feedback and working collaboratively to enhance the universitys outdoor spaces.
This role requires a commitment to excellence, adaptability, and a willingness to receive constructive feedback to continuously improve landscape design and planning across campus. While the Landscape Architect plays a key role in shaping projects, final decisions will be made in coordination with leadership and relevant stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Project Collaboration & Review - Attend capital project and planning meetings related to new campus landscapes and renovations, providing informed feedback to ensure designs align with university expectations, current construction standards, and sustainability goals.
- Landscape Design & Implementation - Develop thoughtful and aesthetically cohesive campus landscape designs while working closely with CGL leadership and contractors to oversee installations. Ensure all design specifications are met and the original design intent is maintained.
- Budget & Project Tracking - Monitor project budgets, costs, and progress through the campus work order management system. Provide timely updates to CGL leadership to support data-driven decision-making.
- Technical & Site Plan Review - Serve as the lead departmental technical reviewer for site plans, collaborating with internal reviewers and subject matter experts. Assess building projects for their impact on campus landscapes and contribute to the development of construction specifications. Provide cost estimates and ensure designs align with the campus master plan, aesthetics, local ecosystem, water conservation efforts, and native plant integration.
- Administrative & Compliance Duties - Adhere to university policies by maintaining an acceptable driver rating, completing routine paperwork, logging vehicle mileage, and verifying daily labor and work orders through UT Works.
- Other duties as Assigned - Engage in collaborative efforts with Campus Operations departments, faculty, students, and staff. Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required to support university-wide initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture with formal coursework in horticulture. Professional licensure as a landscape architect (PLA or RLA), or ability to obtain licensure within 12 months. At least 5 years of professional experience in the field of horticulture or landscape architecture. Candidate should demonstrate strong skills in landscape design, site planning, sustainability, construction, and environmental stewardship. Must be proficient in software such as AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D modeling tools like SketchUp. Effective project management abilities and strong communication skills and experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and departments. Familiarity with institutional campus environments and sustainable landscape practices.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsMasters degree in landscape architecture, horticulture, or related field. Currently holds professional licensure as a landscape architect (PLA or RLA). Professional experience in campus landscapes, institutional projects, or public sector work. A solid understanding of applicable codes and construction standards, construction processes, technical specifications, ADA compliance, stormwater management, and green infrastructure. More than 5 years of professional experience in the field of horticulture or landscape architecture. Familiarity with university campus environments, historic preservation, and urban planning. Related professional certifications, licensures, and qualifications.
Driving RequiredThis job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
