Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Facilities Maintenance Manager, this is skilled work at the journeyman level in the construction, alteration, repair, and maintenance of wooden structures, equipment, and articles. Employees of this class are responsible for performing skilled carpentry tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Work involves the construction and maintenance of various articles of wood involving the use of standard tools and power-driven machinery. Work includes repairing doors, windows, and other parts of buildings; repairing decks, chairs, and concrete forms; and performing hand and bench work in a carpentry shop. Work assignments are received in the form of oral or written orders that may be accompanied by illustrative sketches and plans.
Essential Functions:
- Performs a variety of rough and finished carpentry work.
- Performs skilled mill and cabinet work involving construction, finishing, and repairing of buildings, doors, and other building-related items.
- Refinishes furniture.
- Builds forms, and operates planers, shapers, jointers, lathes, handsaws, and other woodworking machinery.
- Maintains tools and machinery in safe and efficient operating conditions.
- Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade.
- Prepares drawings and sketches of construction and repair projects.
- Estimates cost and orders materials needed.
- May assist in cement work, fence repair, and other outside maintenance work.
- May be required to work in other trade areas on a temporary basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings.
- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of equipment, tools, mechanical devices, and their uses to produce motion, light, power, technology, and other applications.
- Ability to work with numbers, their operations, and interrelationships including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
- Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the carpentry trade.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the carpentry trade.
- Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and specifications.
- Skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the carpentry trade.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Experience:
- Five years of carpentry-level experience (preferred)
- One or two more years as a journeyman (desired)
Education:
- High School Diploma or Graduation from a technical High School, and/or Associate or Technical Degree (preferred)
Physical Requirements:
- Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping, or crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, grasping, talking, and hearing.
- Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner.
- Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less, bring objects into sharp focus and see up and down or to the right or left while fixed on a point.
- Medium work - exerts up to 10 pounds of force continuously and/or over 60 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force, constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling object(s) weighing up to 75 pounds.
- Climbing ladders and working from heights as necessary.
- Standing and walking for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions and Environment
- Must be able to withstand extreme temperatures as well as potentially hazardous environments.
- Must be physically able to wear a dust mask/respirator and face protection.
- Indoor/outdoor environment subject to changing conditions and temperatures exceeding 90 degrees at times.
- Regular exposure to fumes, dust, odors, heights, and loud noises.
- Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
- Work in direct contact with the public, students, and other District staff.
