ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.

As a Utility Mechanic-SCBA with the City of Phoenix Water Services Department, you will perform skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of pumps and mechanical equipment at a water or wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, deep well site, lift station, or booster station. Work will require the operation of machinery, but emphasis is upon servicing, installing, repairing, and maintaining equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of an O&M Supervisor, and the general direction of Senior Utility Operator, Maintenance Planner Scheduler, or an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic, who reviews work while in progress and upon completion. Work assignments are varied, and employees must be knowledgeable in general mechanical maintenance/repair and hydraulic principles.

Multiple vacancies currently exist at the 91st Ave and 23rd Ave Wastewater Treatment Plants.

SALARY

Pay Range: $24.93 to $36.84 per hour.

Hiring Range: $24.93 to $33.41 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in equipment maintenance and repair involving pumps, valves, and motors in a water or wastewater industrial setting.

  • Graduation from an accredited mechanical trade school may be substituted for six months of experience.

  • Completion of City of Phoenix Operations & Maintenance Technician Trainee program may be substituted for 6 months experience.

  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Possession of a Grade 1 Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Water Treatment certification by the end of the 12-month probationary period.

  • If you possess certification from another state or jurisdiction, please contact the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality ( ) for Arizona Request for Operator Certification Reciprocity procedures and certification equivalency.

  • Positions with SCBA assignment will be required to maintain annual Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) certification through refresher training and annual physical examination per Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

  • Possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License is required for positions at the 23rd Ave Wastewater Treatment plant by the end of the probationary year.

  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions.

  • Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.

  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience in/with:

  • Compressors.
  • Plumbing and pipe fitting.
  • Chlorine equipment repair.
  • Welding/cutting/fabrication.
  • Industrial equipment repair and troubleshooting.

Work conditions require the willingness/ability to:

  • Walk for prolonged periods, which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
  • Move heavy objects 50 pounds or more long distances more than 20 feet.
  • Work in small, cramped areas or climb ladders to access equipment.
  • Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, dust, and around untreated water and wastewater.
  • Work irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Respond to emergency call outs, troubleshoot problems, and take appropriate action to ensure plant station integrity.
