Salary Range: $31.39 - $40.17 per hour/35 hours per weekDate Posted: May 16, 2025Deadline for Applying: May 30, 2025Remarks: This is a Classified/Bargaining Unit Position.Examination Weight: 60%Written/40% OralStatement of Duties: Under the general supervision of the Building Official and Director, is responsible for inspecting residential and commercial buildings to ensure construction is in conformance with the Rhode Island State Building Codes as demonstrated by the approved plans and all pertinent City ordinances..Inspects new buildings, additions to and alterations of existing buildings for compliance with up-to-date editions of the State of RI Building Codes, City ordinances and regulations.Inspects and returns to building projects to ensure construction proceeds in accordance with plans approved with the building permit.Inspects existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.Inspects excavations, foundation forms, concrete, steel, masonry, wood construction, framing, drywall, and other applicable installations and a large variety of other complex or routine building system elements.Notifies contractors of code violations using a written compliance report at the time of inspection.Reads and interprets technical manuals with adopted codes, drawings, instructions, and specifications as related to construction projects.Attends meetings and classes to maintain certification.Confers with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and in the office.Explains and interprets building code and restrictions.Keeps and updates a daily log of construction and inspection activities and updates computer with results of inspections performed.Re-inspects sites to verify corrections to violations, and takes the action necessary to ensure compliance by recalcitrant owners and contractors.Performs related work as required or assigned.Education and Experience: Graduation from a high school or trade school (or GED) and International Code Council - High School Technical Training Program certification, with some demonstrable construction experience; or a minimum of three (3) years of residential or commercial construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal, and be knowledgeable with Microsoft or similar office systems. Preference may be given to candidates who have worked with software applications commonly used for permitting, such as OpenGov.Licenses or Certifications Required: Licenses or Certifications Required: Must possess and maintain a valid, state issued drivers license as a condition of employment.
