Overview
Garmin Canada has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Senior/Lead Mechanical Engineer who has a hunger for solving real world problems in the consumer electronics space. As a member of the mechanical engineering team, you will be involved in all aspects of product design – concept sketches to mass production and beyond. You will deliver superior mechanical solutions to Garmin’s fitness and outdoor segments while productizing and maintaining new technologies for consumer products.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer on the products team will:
- Be a master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks
- Complete complex mechanical designs for Garmin and OEM products
- Mockup and test complex mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
- Display good knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.
- Display good knowledge of material requirements, material performance, and material limitations
- Specify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements
- Manage basic tradeoffs and determine risk mitigation plans as appropriate
- Make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand the risk
- Be knowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)
- Make substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
- Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (1,2, and Senior) on technologies, cost analysis, design techniques and problem solving process
- Provide technical input to product development plans and concept documents
- Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques
- Offer process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required
- Apply good judgment in setting schedules and risk taking
- Exemplify Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture
- Independently determine general approach and specific solutions to technical problems
- Apply knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
- Lead explorations of new technologies
- Travel overseas as required
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/manufacturing/aerospace engineering with 5 or more years of relevant industry experience which must include:
- Demonstrated knowledge of CAD software and the ability to model highly complex parts (Solidworks or Onshape preferred)
- Experience working within a collaborative team environment
- Mechanical design experience in the consumer electronics field
- Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Eligible for registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P. Eng) in Alberta.
Desired Qualifications
- Design of parts for mass production manufacturing methods including: injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, and machining processes.
- Design of assemblies for automated and manual production lines (design for manufacturing).
- Use of Solidworks PDM or similar tool to manage CAD assets
- Experience managing trade-offs between schedule, cost, manufacturing, appearance, and performance
- Experience making test plans for complex mechanical systems
- Excitement to create and deliver products for cycling, running, swimming and fitness!
