Job Summary:

The Rolling Stock Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of all mobile equipment used in the sawmill, including forklifts, loaders, skid steers, yard tractors, and other rolling stock. This role ensures that equipment operates safely and efficiently to support uninterrupted mill operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on all mobile equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
  • Diagnose issues using diagnostic software and tools as needed.
  • Repair or replace worn parts such as brakes, bearings, seals, and tires.
  • Maintain accurate service records for all equipment.
  • Weld, fabricate, or modify parts or components as needed for repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Communicate equipment status and repair needs to supervisors and equipment operators.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Assist in managing spare parts inventory related to rolling stock.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certification in diesel or heavy equipment preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience repairing and maintaining rolling stock or heavy equipment, preferably in an industrial or sawmill environment.
  • Strong understanding of diesel and gas engine repair, hydraulics, electrical systems, and powertrains.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and service manuals.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform duties in varying weather conditions.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily outdoors and in shop environments; exposure to noise, dust, grease, and heavy equipment.
  • May require shift work, weekends, or on-call support based on production needs.
