The City of Hillsboro is currently recruiting for two (2) exciting positions in our Public Works Roadway Division team: Engineering Technician and Senior Engineering Technician. These roles are central to maintaining the infrastructure that keeps Hillsboro movingfrom roads and sidewalks to pedestrian ramps and street trees!

Engineering Technician

The Engineering Technician works under the leadership of Engineers and Senior Engineering Technicians to provide technical and operational support in the inspection, maintenance, and documentation of public infrastructure.

Typical Duties:

  • Use asset management and permit software to retrieve and manage scheduled inspections and permit reviews

  • Conduct field inspections of homeowner and contractor work in the right-of-way

  • Meet with residents about sidewalk, ramp, or street tree concerns

  • Coordinate repairs and document work in asset management systems (e.g., Cartegraph )

  • Create maps and letters to communicate issues and project updates

  • Coordinate with partner agencies for repairs in adjacent right-of-way areas

  • Draft emails, memos, and notices for the public

  • Logical and methodical approach to problem solving

  • Comfortable balancing administrative tasks (GIS, data entry) with field inspections

  • Eager to learn, ask questions, and take initiative

Job Qualifications & Requirements: Engineering Technician

  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering , Construction Engineering, GIS, or related field

  • 2 years of journey-level experience in engineering inspection, surveying, GIS, or related field

Senior Engineering Technician

The Senior Engineering Technician acts as a lead worker i n the Roadway section, providing day-to-day direction to Engineering Technicians and serving as a key liaison between the department, contractors, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate daily work schedules and provide job-specific training to technicians

  • Lead inspections and ensure quality compliance with City construction standards

  • Review, process, and approve permit applications for pavement, sidewalks, ramps, and vegetation

  • Coordinate with contractors, City departments, and partner agencies

  • Represent the City in meetings with the public, consultants, and contractors

  • Prepare reports, memos, maps, and other communication materials

  • Lead events, trainings, and outreach related to roadway programs

  • Manage records in accordance with retention policies

Ideal Candidate Traits:

  • Proven leadership and mentoring ability

  • Strong project coordination and communication skills

  • High attention to detail and organizational excellence

  • Technical knowledge in asset management, inspection protocols, and permit processing

Job Qualifications & Requirements: Senior Engineering Technician

  • Associates degree in Civil Engineering , Construction Engineering, GIS, or related field

  • At least 3 years of journey-level experience in engineering inspection, surveying, GIS, or related field

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
