Electrical Engineer Intern

  • Cohu
  • Saint Paul, Minnesota

Cohu is seeking an Engineering Student with experience in signal integrity theory to assist in the design, and characterization of sockets, connectors, cables and PCB hardware for high volume semiconductor test interfaces. The primary responsibility of this position is to simulate, measure and analyze the signal integrity of components used in the high-speed digital, optical interfaces, and high frequency RF applications. Applications include 224GHz PAM4 electrical and optical interfaces, , auto networking (28GBPS NRZ), RF front end (sub-6 GHz), automotive radar (76-81GHz) and mmWave transceivers (50-60GHz).This position requires knowledge and use of 3D electromagnetic (Ansys HFSS), 2D planar, and circuit level simulation. The position requires use of a Vector Network Analyzer for characterization of interface hardware is also required. Both mechanical and electrical aptitude is required as well as solid communication and organization skills and the ability to work on a cross-functional team. Project management responsibilities include maintaining timelines and meeting milestones for projects requiring simulation and measurement, alignment with mechanical engineering and marketing teams, and clear communication of RF simulation and characterization results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to (other duties may be assigned):

  • Use 3D finite element analysis and circuit simulation software (Ansys HFSS and Discovery) to simulate and optimize test interface hardware including test sockets, connectors, waveguides, cable interfaces, and PCB layouts - for high frequencies (up to 100+ GHz)
  • Characterize RF performance of interface hardware including test sockets, connectors, antennas, waveguides, cable interfaces, and PCB layouts using coplanar waveguide probes, manual and automated probe stations and Vector Network Analyzers. Measurements include single-ended and differential insertion loss, return loss, impedance, and crosstalk..
  • Analyze and Correlate simulation to VNA measurement results
  • Research and apply theory of signal integrity/Power Delivery/antenna concepts related to PCBs, test sockets and other interconnect technology.
  • Design and/or integrate switches, antennas, waveguides, filters, and couplers into interface hardware
  • Provide data analysis used to define next-generation products that consider both electrical and mechanical performance tradeoffs for high volume semiconductor test interfaces.
  • Review datasheets and RF device specifications and match products with High speed digital and RF applications
  • Generate test reports and create presentations describing the signal integrity of new interface product

Education and/or Experience:

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, Electronics, or Hardware Engineering or similar
  • Understanding of transmission line and microwave theory
  • Experience with simulation using 3D electromagnetic and circuit level simulation tools preferred
  • knowledge of S-parameters and Vector network Analyzers preferred
  • Understanding of calibration procedures and theory of VNA hardware a plus
  • Experience applying RF theory to mechanical design a plus
  • Experience with high speed digital and RF theory and concepts a plus
  • Familiar with Microsoft Office products including word, excel, PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills; ability to communicate effectively with both domestic and foreign colleagues/vendors
