Concrete Technician / Asphalt Technician Level 3 Job Description An Asphalt Laborer Level 3, often referred to as an asphalt paving laborer or asphalt technician, performs manual labor tasks involved in the construction and maintenance of asphalt surfaces, including road paving, patching, and resurfacing. This level of laborer typically has more experience and can perform tasks independently or with minimal supervision. Responsibilities Preparation and Surface Work: Dig out and prepare cuts in street surfaces, spray oil coatings for bonding, and rake paving materials into desired locations. Asphalt Handling: Spread asphalt and/or cement from supply trucks, direct its placement, and use tools like rakes and shovels. Equipment Operation: Operate hand and power tools like shovels, levels, picks, hand tampers, asphalt rakes, pavement breakers, compactors, spreader boxes, concrete/asphalt saws, and power brooms. Material Handling: Load, unload, transport, and distribute materials, equipment, and tools throughout the job site. Compaction and Finishing: Remove or add material to voids or uneven surfaces, operate paving rollers, and ensure proper compaction and smooth finishes. Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean and maintain tools, equipment, and job sites. Safety: Follow safety procedures, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain awareness of potential hazards. Other Tasks: May include patching potholes, cold patching, hot patching, snow and ice removal, painting, striping, and other tasks as assigned by the foreman or superintendent. Essential Skills Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, carrying, and bending. Tool Proficiency: Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools used in asphalt paving and maintenance. Attention to Detail: Ability to pay attention to detail and ensure surfaces are properly compacted and finished. Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers. Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and address issues related to asphalt paving and surface quality. Safety Awareness: Understanding of basic safety precautions and the ability to follow safety procedures. Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Possession of personal Construction PPEs (hard hat, high visibility vest, steel toe or work boots) and tools specific to being an Asphalt Laborer. Work Environment The Asphalt Laborer will be working on construction sites across various locations throughout Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo County. Shift is primarily from 7:00AM - 4:00PM Monday through Friday. The majority of the work will be outside and labor-intensive, requiring flexibility with working hours and locations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Nipomo, California. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.
