What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. We seek a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Engineering Group as a Cryogenics Electrical Engineer. A Cryogenics Electrical Engineer will assist in the development, implementation, documentation, commissioning, and operation of numerous cryogenic projects within Jefferson Lab and other national or international accelerator laboratories on systems capable of operating at temperatures down to 2.1 Kelvin. Many of the systems are unique and represent the state of the art in cryogenics. Work can include configuring motors and drives, setting up and maintaining control and data acquisition systems, developing software, and operating cryogenic plants.

In this role, you will:

  • Design and implement control systems, including architecture and wiring for Cryogenic equipment. This involves creating drawings for the systems utilizing AutoCAD. Examples of drawings include Programmable Logic Controller system layouts, 120/208/480V power distribution to motors/heaters, and equipment layouts. Coordinate with technicians and other Engineers to document and fabricate these designs.
  • Program control systems for the Cryogenic equipment, such as compressors and turbines. This involves utilizing PLC and computer programming skills such as Studio 5000, Connected Components Workbench, and programming languages such as Python and C++.
  • Participate in Cryogenic operations for the group. This involves reviewing process piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDS), manipulating plant valves, monitoring data history trends of pressures/temperatures, and starting or stopping equipment to support re-configurations and restarts.
  • Supporting 24/7 operations of the Cryogenics Department as a Cryogenic Coordinator on call. This means responding to operational emergencies outside normal business hours. The Cryogenic Coordinator is the on-call duty representative for the department for a week's duration for 3 to 4 times per year. (Training will be provided.) Occasional mandatory unplanned work, typically for emergency repairs, will be required

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong fundamentals in electrical engineering
  • Ability to use programming languages such as C, C++, python, JAVA, etc...
  • Familiar with test equipment such as oscilloscopes, function generators, and multimeters
  • Good communication and verbal skills
