JOB TITLE: Carpenter
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Facilities Maintenance
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs intermediate skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation and construction of rough and finished carpentry in school buildings and facilities; does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs rough and finished carpentry.
- Builds shelving and cabinets.
- Repairs wooden structures and equipment such as doors, door locks, windows, roofs, walls, floors, benches, desks, chairs and fences.
- Serves as painter; prepares and paints interior and exteriors of buildings, tables, benches, shelters, etc., as required.
- Serves as lead for other trades as assigned.
- Welds and fabricates metal fixtures as required.
- Designs small projects, estimates material needs, and purchases materials.
- Assists other trades as necessary.
- Performs other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the mechanical or building trades to which assigned; thorough knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with assigned trade; skill in the use of tools and equipment; ability to draw and work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow and issue oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience as a skilled tradespersons. Special Requirements Must have appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. A Commercial Driver's license (CDL) is preferred but not required.

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, use of fingers, grasping and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.
