The purpose of this position is to assist the Engineering Department in surveying, drafting, design, and inspection of various public works projects.
The work performed by this class requires incumbents to apply professional knowledge and expertise as well as established guidelines and alternatives to determine facts, analyze problems, and make decisions without immediate supervisory review. Experience:
While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, reach with hands and arms, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift 10 to 20 pounds; rarely lift and/or move 20 to 50 pounds (employee may ask for assistance). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work is performed mostly in an office environment with some time spent outside in the field in a variety of weather conditions. While in the field, the employee must stand or walk on variable surfaces including hard, even surfaces and uneven ground, as well as sloped embankments. Employee occasionally works in the right of way or construction sites and may be exposed to physical hazards such as moving traffic and heavy construction equipment. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. Indoors, the noise level is usually moderate; outdoors, the noise level may be moderate to loud.

- Performs a variety of tasks related to civil engineering under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer and/or senior level engineering staff.Provides engineering support during all phases of a project including planning, design and construction for projects as directed.
- Performs topographic field surveys and data collection as directed.
- Assists with and/or prepares plans, specifications and estimates for transportation, storm water, sewer, water and public facility projects undertaken by the city.
- Performs project inspection, material testing and stakeout during construction, tracks project quantities and materials.
- Supports the traffic engineer in such activities including traffic data collection and other traffic operational and safety related activities.
- Assists in the preparation and/or reviews studies or technical reports related to engineering assignments.
- Assists with and/or coordinates right-of-way/easement acquisitions, permitting, environmental review, private utility relocation, and developer extensions.
- Assists with and/or coordinates project management of capital and miscellaneous projects.
- Provides engineering support to other departments within the city as directed.
Experience:
- Two years of civil engineering experience.
- Associate's degree, with major coursework in civil engineering technology or related field.
- Bachelor's degree in related field, preferred.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate preferred.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within one month of hire date, a Washington State Driver's License.
