Job Description
Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. Trains others. Leads the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.Essential Duties: Construction Inspector V:Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and reviewactivities for plan development.Trains and makes training-related recommendations to staff on new operations.Calculates payments due contractors for work completed.Ensures inspectors turn in monthly estimates in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate payments to contractors.Assist in planning and coordinating office operations.Serves as a lead worker or project leader.Oversees preparation of monthly and final estimates.Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plandevelopment by others.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Additional duties for Construction Inspector VI:Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to managementAssists Project Engineers in determining number of inspectors needed on assigned projects.Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress andconstruction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance withplans and specifications.Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
