Part-Time Assistant Building Official
GENERAL DUTIES:
Work involves responsibility for safe enforcement of the Connecticut Basic Building Code. Duties include processing applications and building permitsreviewing construction plansand inspecting building construction. This position also has the responsibility for making difficult building code enforcement decisions in accordance with the Connecticut Basic Building Code. This work requires that the employee have considerable knowledgeskill and ability in building construction inspection procedures and the Connecticut Basic Building Code.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Receives and processes applications for all permits required by Code. Reviews construction plans for conformance with the Code and confers with contractors on corrective actions to be taken. Recommends issuance of building permits.
Inspects all aspects of construction including sitesfootingsfoundationsdrainageframingplumbingheatingmechanicalelectricaland final. Confers with contractors and owners on corrections to be made.
Confers with Town officialscontractorsarchitectsdevelopersengineersand property owners on the codes and their interpretation. Provides technical assistance to other Town departments on proposed or in-progress development projects.
Maintains comprehensive records of all permitting and inspection actions. Prepares correspondence and compiles reports on activity.
Assists in overseeing the Building Departmentas assigned. Acts as Building Official in his absence.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGESKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Considerable knowledge of building construction principles and practices including electricalplumbing and heating systems. Specialty certifications in electricalplumbingand/or heating systems preferred.
Considerable knowledge of code enforcement and inspection principles and practices.
Thorough knowledge of the Connecticut Basic Building Code.
Good knowledge of public administration principles and practices as applied to code enforcement administration.
Good ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Considerable ability to enforce the Basic Building Code with firmness and tact.
Good ability to maintain code enforcement records and carry out administrative procedures.
Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkerscontractorsconsultantsother governmental agenciesand the general public.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATION:
Must be a Connecticut Certified Assistant Building Official.
Must have a valid Connecticut Driver's License.
