DEFINITION:

Under general direction, is responsible for performing skilled work in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, motors, and related equipment in City-owned buildings and facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a single-incumbent professional classification. The employee receives general supervision from the Department Director. The employee receives leadership from the Facilities Maintenance Manager and general supervision from the Building and Community Services Director or Assistant Director and exercises no supervision.

The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Installs, maintains, alters, and repairs electrical fixtures and equipment, including wiring, lighting, power appliances, machinery, overhead circuits, underground conduits, and pole lines.

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical motors and generators used in various pumping operations, may require frequent lifting/carrying of up to 30 pounds.

  • Installs electrical hook-ups for special events.

  • Performs visual inspections and preventative maintenance on building equipment.

  • Repairs and maintains clocks, motors, and similar appliances in municipal buildings, climbing, balancing, walking, reaching, sitting, standing, bending, and stooping as needed.

  • Performs re-lamping of picnic areas, recreational areas, parking lots, and taxiways.

  • Installs electrical outlets, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, electrical panels, computer plugs, lighting systems, and other electrical components and equipment, operating tools and equipment of the electrical trade.

  • Installs security and landscape lighting.

  • Maintains an inventory of parts and equipment.

  • Maintains emergency lighting systems.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge of:

  • Tools, materials, methods, and practices of the electrical trades.

  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade, including working with high voltage.

  • City, state, and national electrical codes.

  • Electrical installation, repair, and maintenance techniques, practices, and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Analyze and evaluate major projects, policies, and procedures to develop recommendations for improvements relative to the City of Waxahachies accepted utility standards.

  • Read and interpret technical information, construction plans, and complex maps.

  • Operate a variety of modern office equipment safely and effectively.

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, laws, and regulations.

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Provide and receive detailed information and deal effectively with conflict and complaint resolution

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, plus a minimum of 4 or more years in dedicated electrical maintenance or construction.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • A valid State of Texas driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Special Requirements:

  • Licensed as a Journeyman Electrician by the State of Texas.

  • Position requires regular in-person attendance, which may include occasional evenings and weekends.

Work Environment

Work is performed in a variety of settings, with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to and as found in water and wastewater field operations, water and wastewater treatment plants environment and construction sites. Work may require exposure to outside weather conditions
