Duties Description Program Overview: The Monitoring and Assessment Section (MAS) of the Bureau of Water Assessment and Management (BWAM) is responsible for monitoring, assessing, and researching streams, lakes, and groundwater of New York State (NYS). Under several statewide programs, including both professional and citizen-based programs, MAS implements targeted-, probability-, and trend-based sampling designs for monitoring the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of NYS waters, and conducts applied research to advance understanding and protection of these resources.

Duties/Responsibilities: The Environmental Engineering Technician 1 will be responsible for assisting senior staff in the coordination, collection, and analysis of ambient water and biological quality data for the Rotating Integrated Basin Studies (RIBS) stream and river monitoring programs. The candidate will also be responsible for providing general support to MAS and BWAM programs and priorities.

Specific duties will include:

  • Collection of ambient water quality samples, field measurements, and physical observations from streams & rivers throughout New York State

.Use of GIS to develop datasets and analyze data related to statewide monitoring locations and water quality.

  • Development and update to digital surveys used in the collection of monitoring data.
  • Compilation and management of field and laboratory data, including data entry and organization of electronic files, and review for accuracy.
  • Development and maintenance of information about the Monitoring and Assessment Section and its programs on the internal and public DEC websites.
  • Assisting in applied research and data analysis and reporting.
  • Laboratory sample sorting and identification of benthic macroinvertebrates in support of citizen-based programs.

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Candidates should be familiar with biological and water column chemical monitoringmethods.
  • Candidates should be familiar with the use of electronic devices for data collection and with the development of digital survey, Microsoft Access and statistical methods used in the interpretation of environmental data.
  • Strong GIS skills are preferred for this position including experience creating and editing features, using spatial analyst extensions, and using other geostatistical tools in ArcGIS.
  • Some experience working with statistical software packages and their programming languages such as "R" or "Python" is preferred.
  • Candidates should be team orientated
  • Possession of a NYSDEC Boating Safety Certificate is preferred.
  • Candidates should be familiar with use of dichotomous keys.

Additional Comments:

  • Must have a valid driver license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportationneeds of the position. Travel (with reimbursement), primarily throughout New York State,but occasionally out of state and overnight travel will be required (April-October).Candidate must be able to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions andcarry 50 pounds of gear for short distances across uneven terrain.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience in technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; geology or geology technology; or as a surveyor or a drafter;

OR graduation from high school and one year of qualifying experience;

OR graduation from a high school technical education program in aeronautics, architectural drafting, chemistry, electricity, electronics, mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems, or computer circuitry;

OR 18 college semester credit hours in any combination of the following: engineering, geology, environmental science, natural or physical science, drafting, mathematics, or surveying.

Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/26. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.

Travel may be required.
