Electrician II Job Group: Merit Required Minimum Qualifications: Requires State of Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician license with at least four years as an apprentice plus two years of experience as a journeyman electrician; or State of Iowa Class B Journeyman Electrician license with eight years in the electrical trade in maintenance or construction. Must possess a valid drivers license and meet Universitys Fleet Safety Program. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with lighting controls systems, including troubleshooting and installation
Experience working with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), including troubleshooting and installation
Experience with commercial/industrial and three-phase electrical systems
Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (e.g., Metasys)
Experience using electrical system testing and diagnostic tools such as insulation testers, thermal imaging, or power analyzers Job Description:

Facilities Planning and Management is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Electrician II . This role plays a critical part in the ongoing maintenance, repair, and enhancement of the universitys electrical infrastructure. Under general supervision, the Electrician II will apply journey-level skills to install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems and equipment (typically under 600 volts). The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience, technical knowledge, and a commitment to safety and service in supporting Iowa States academic and research mission.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace electrical systems and components such as circuit breakers, relays, switches, conduit, wiring, receptacles, and magnetic starters/controls

  • Perform preventive maintenance and keep accurate records of electrical systems and equipment

  • Work with programmable lighting and HVAC controllers, solid-state control systems, and motor control systems

  • Maintain and repair electrical equipment including electric motors, transformers, generators, lights, fixtures, bulbs, tubes, drivers, and meters

  • Install and service Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

  • Work with step-up/step-down transformers, current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), and protective field devices

  • Utilize specialized diagnostic tools and processes such as insulation testers (e.g., Megger), thermal imaging cameras, and thermal/infrared (TIR) procedures

  • Operate equipment and software for line/power monitoring and predictive testing

  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings for system modifications and new installations

  • Estimate material needs, track expenditures, and maintain project documentation

  • Communicate with campus customers regarding scope, progress, and project completion

  • Ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable local/state codes

  • Support fire alarm and annunciator systems in collaboration with trained specialists

  • Respond to unplanned power outages and assist with other system infrastructure issues

Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace programmable lighting controllers
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace programmable building heating and cooling controllers
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace solid state control systems
Utilize specialized tools, equipment and processes to perform system and equipment diagnostics
Operate equipment and software associated with (but not limited to) thermal/infrared imaging and line/power monitoring
Performs preventive maintenance on electrical equipment systems and control systems.
As required, will commission 600 volts and less electrical distribution systems and related equipment, and control systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of safety precautions mandated by OSHA, NFPA, NEC and the EPA.
Demonstrates all knowledge, skills, and abilities listed under Electrician I.
Knowledge of electrical control systems, including variable frequency drives.
Ability to use and interpret specialty tools and equipment used to troubleshoot electrical equipment and systems.
Ability to plan and perform work involving the installation, modification, troubleshooting and repair of new and existing control systems and related equipment.
Ability to work in all types of environmental conditions or in areas where there is exposure to excessive noise, dirt, and fumes and at elevated heights from ladders, scaffolds, or hydraulic lifts.
Ability to work independently during normal work hours and after hours.
