Required Education and Experience :

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of engineering or related technical experience.
  • Bachelors degree in engineering, surveying, construction management, computer science, or other specific area of study as deemed applicable may substitute for four (4) years of experience; or
  • Associates degree in areas of study listed above may substitute for two (2) years of experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as those listed above.

Preferred Qualifications :
  • GIS Certificate
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD, including Civil 3D pipe networks
  • Skills in GIS scripting languages such as Python and Arcade
  • Familiarity with civil construction plans and drafting conventions
  • Knowledge of sanitary sewer or storm drain conveyance systems, including pipe types, structures, and construction methods

Available Schedules:

  • 8 hours daily, Monday - Friday
  • Opportunity for alternate schedule after the first 90-days:
    • 9-80 (nine-hour workdays with a three-day weekend every other week)

The anticipated hiring range for the Engineering Technician III position is $32.68 (first step) to $34.31 or $36.03 (second or third step). The City of Medford determines starting pay based on an evaluation of relevant education, experience, and qualifications as provided by the applicant in their application materials, alongside others who perform work of comparable character consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

Essential Functions of the Position:
  • Produces, processes, files, and maintains a variety of records, maps, plans, permits, property descriptions and other technical-related information.
  • Assists the public with a variety of inquiries and requests for information related to public works services; pursues and resolves citizen complaints in the area of expertise.
  • Consults with and provides information to contractors, developers, other departments, agencies, and the public.
  • Prepares a variety of reports related to activities in assigned area of responsibility.
  • Assists in preparing City Council agenda commentaries; attends meetings and represents the Public Works Department.
  • The scope of the assigned area will depend on the departmental structure and is as the discretion of the Public Works director.

Positions assigned to Records and Mapping are responsible for:

  • Maintaining GIS databases and spatial maps for various engineering and public works related assets including storm drain, sanitary sewer, and streets. Tracking jurisdictional transfers of assets. Responding to data edit requests from Operations Division.
  • Keeping records of all public improvement plans in mylar, paper, and pdf formats; editing pdf records to track plan revisions, posting records to various programs for department and public access; ensuring paper plans and revisions are provided to construction inspectors.
  • Performing research into records to find construction plans for specific streets or assets.
  • Responding to public queries related to the locations of storm drain and sanitary sewer pipes and laterals.
  • Calculating the quantities of new infrastructure assets (streets, pipes, etc.) from engineering plans. Providing yearly reports on city owned assets and their value.
  • Reviewing CAD files, As-Built surveys, and Record Drawings to confirm record standards are being met by surveyors and engineers.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Performs work indoors in an office environment with regulated and minimal environmental conditions. This role involves time spent sitting at a desk, working on a computer. The noise level is typically moderate to medium. When fieldwork is required you will be exposed to the elements (rain, heat, cold) and work within congested traffic areas. The outside work environment can include walking on uneven terrain. This environment may also include interactions with the public.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. This position requires extended periods of standing, walking, and sitting. Must be able to crouch, bend, stoop, twist, turn, and balance. The employee regularly operates various office equipment, including computers, printers, copy machines, calculators, and telephones. Good eyesight, hearing, balance and dexterity are required.
