Job DescriptionJob Description
The Senior Estimator & Purchasing Manager will be responsible for managing the estimating and purchasing activities of the company. The ideal candidate will have experience in all phases of estimating, from conceptual to detailed, and be able to provide accurate and timely estimates for construction projects. The candidate must also have experience in negotiating and purchasing materials, equipment, and services to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
Responsibilities:
Assist the Preconstruction Manager in managing and mentor the estimating team to ensure accurate and timely estimates
Develop and implement procedures and policies to improve estimating practices
Work collaboratively with project management, administration, and operations teams to ensure a cohesive approach to estimating and project execution
Prepare and Review Estimates
Develop and prepare accurate and detailed estimates for various construction projects, including material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs
Review and analyze project plans and specifications to determine scope of work and required materials and equipment
Conduct on-site visits to understand site conditions and project requirements (uncommon/as needed)
Purchasing and Negotiation
Develop and implement a procurement plan to ensure that materials, equipment, and services are purchased at the best possible price
Identify and qualify potential vendors and subcontractors
Negotiate pricing and terms with vendors and subcontractors to ensure cost-effective purchasing
Cost Management and Reporting
Monitor project costs and provide regular reports to senior management on project status and cost performance
Identify cost-saving opportunities and work with project teams to implement cost-saving measures
Assist with project budget development and tracking
Contract Management
Review and analyze contracts and subcontracts to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
Assist with the preparation and negotiation of contracts and subcontracts
Manage change orders and claims related to contracts and subcontracts
Requirements:
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field
Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction estimating and purchasing, with at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role
Technical Skills
Strong technical knowledge of construction materials, methods, and techniques
Expertise in estimating software, such as Bluebeam, ProEst, or similar software
Familiarity with purchasing and procurement in managing buyouts & scope of work development to ensure no scope gaps or contractual disputes
Communication and Leadership Skills
Strong communication and negotiation skills
Ability to lead and mentor a team of estimators and purchasing professionals
Ability to work collaboratively with project management, engineering, and operations teams
Analytical and Strategic Thinking
Ability to analyze and interpret project plans and specifications
Ability to identify cost-saving opportunities and develop cost-effective solutions/V.E. Exercises
Ability to develop and implement procurement strategies
Attention to Detail and Time Management
Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate estimates and cost management
Strong time management skills to meet project deadlines
Subcontractor Relations
Manage relationships with subcontractors, a strong network with subcontractors will be VERY favorably held by the hiring company
Manage the subcontractor bidding process, reviewing bids for completeness and accuracy
Negotiate and execute subcontractor agreements, ensuring compliance with project budgets
