The Pipe / Drainage Superintendent in West Palm Beach oversees all phases of underground utility installation—storm drainage, water mains, and sanitary sewers—on Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and municipal roadway construction projects. This role ensures field operations are executed safely, efficiently, and in strict compliance with FDOT specifications, project drawings, and quality standards. The Superintendent supervises multiple drainage crews and foremen, coordinates with subcontractors and vendors, and serves as the main point of contact for field-related issues. While not required, the ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful to support a bilingual workforce and ensure clear communication across teams.
ResponsibilitiesManage day-to-day drainage operations on FDOT and related public infrastructure projects.
Supervise pipe installation for storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and potable/reclaimed water lines.
Ensure work complies with FDOT plans, specifications, utility permits, and project schedules.
Provide clear direction to drainage foremen and crews and ensure proper safety practices are followed.
Read and interpret construction documents, grade sheets, and survey data for installation accuracy.
Coordinate inspections with FDOT and local agencies and ensure proper documentation is maintained.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and inspectors to resolve field issues in real time.
Monitor equipment and labor productivity; adjust plans and resources as needed to meet deadlines.
Maintain accurate field documentation including daily reports, quantities installed, redlines, and field changes.
Promote a culture of safety and accountability; conduct daily toolbox talks and enforce compliance with OSHA standards.
Support and foster effective communication among a diverse, often bilingual, workforce.
Qualifications
Minimum 5–7 years of experience in pipe and drainage work on civil road construction projects, including at least 2 years in a superintendent or supervisory role.
Strong working knowledge of FDOT standards, MOT (Maintenance of Traffic), trench safety, and utility coordination.
Proven ability to manage multiple crews, subcontractors, and equipment logistics on active jobsites.
Skilled in reading and interpreting FDOT plans, construction drawings, and elevation grades.
OSHA 30 certification preferred: Competent Person and Confined Space certifications a plus.
Proficient in documenting daily activities and communicating job progress clearly and professionally.
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in construction management is a plus.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
- Bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
- May require extended hours, including nights and weekends, depending on project needs.
- Must pass a drug and physical test.
