Primoris Heavy Civil is currently searching for a Field Mechanic to support our Laredo, TX office. Field Mechanic will be responsible for servicing and maintaining a wide range of construction equipment, including heavy machinery, batch plants, diesel trucks, and paving equipment. This position plays a critical role in minimizing downtime and keeping operations running smoothly across multiple job sites. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, and is comfortable working independently in field conditions.

Job Description:

Provide technical engineering expertise to a specific project and provide assistance in the field construction activities, assuring compliance with project plans and specifications. Has a solid understanding of construction processes, equipment coordination, and project documentation such as purchase orders (POs). This is a field-based position that requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work outdoors in dynamic and fast-paced environments.

Functional Requirements:

  • Perform detailed mechanical diagnostics and repairs on a wide range of heavy construction equipment, including loaders, excavators, skid steers, dozers, motor graders, compactors, and backhoes. Troubleshoot issues with engines, drivetrains, suspensions, hydraulic systems, and cooling systems.
  • Conduct comprehensive service on diesel-powered trucks, including oil changes, fuel system diagnostics, emissions systems, DEF systems, brakes, clutches, transmissions, and electrical components to ensure DOT compliance.
  • Maintain and repair concrete paving machinery primarily GOMACO, such as slipform pavers, curb machines, trimmers, and spreaders. Ensure all equipment is calibrated and operating within manufacturer specifications for optimal paving performance.
  • Oversee operational readiness of concrete batch plant equipment, particularly Erye Strayer plants. This includes troubleshooting and maintaining silos, mixers, conveyors, control panels, pumps, etc.
  • Perform fluid checks, filter replacements, lubrication, and inspections based on service intervals and usage data.
  • Respond to equipment failures in the field, assess on-site conditions, and execute timely repairs to minimize project delays. Transport tools and parts to work sites using service vehicles and maintain a mobile workshop setup.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all inspections, repairs, service logs, and parts used. Report equipment condition and service status to supervisors and fleet managers.
  • Identify parts requirements, submit purchase requests, and manage on-hand inventory to ensure critical components are available when needed. Maintain organized storage of tools and parts in both shop and field environments.
  • Collaborate with operations and dispatch teams to minimize equipment downtime.

Qualification Standards:

  • High school diploma or GED; technical school certification preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience working with diesel engines, heavy machinery, and/or concrete batch plant equipment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools and repair equipment.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must comply with company’s drug and alcohol abuse policy.
  • Must be able to pass physical examination, pre-employment if necessary, and as required by the company.
  • Able to carry 75 lbs. of tool and/or materials. It is recommended to get assistance to lift items over 50 lbs. Check with your project supervisor or project safety director.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Willingness to work in outdoor environments and under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to work extended hours on your feet on uneven surfaces (dirt, concrete, asphalt, mud, gravel, etc.)
  • Must be able to work while wearing a respirator and other personal protective equipment, when required.
