Mechanical Superintendent
Primary Function:
The Mechanical Superintendent directs and manages field operations for the project and reports directly to the Site Manager on compliance with policies and procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Direct and coordinate field operations for the entire project including field supervision personnel, materials and subcontractor activities.
- Select and manage appropriate project labor supervisory personnel.
- Work with the Construction Managers to schedule and prioritize work for the different areas of the project.
- Work with project staff to develop schedules, methods and predict craft performance.
- Ensure that efforts of the discipline superintendents parallel the planning, methods and performance developed through the project planning function and the bidding process.
- Be familiar with and execute field work in accordance with the contract documents.
- Be familiar with and execute field work in accordance with the approved project schedule and labor estimates.
- Supervise labor in conformance with the project work rules.
- Plan and schedule, after approval of the Construction Site Manager all craft overtime.
- Work with the planning staff to develop scope and schedule for project procurement packages.
- Cost control is of primary concern and involvement.
- Manage labor relations.
- Manage labor resources; increase/decreases/availability.
- Manage and control project tools and equipment.
- Select appropriate construction equipment and initiate major construction equipment purchases.
- Supervise the maintenance of all on-site construction equipment.
- Manage and supervise quality control.
- Maintain an orderly site.
- Manage site security
- Work closely with Site Manager in setting and supporting project goals.
- Maintain a liaison with client on-site management personnel.
- As a project team member, help work toward a common goal. Promote interaction between all team members.
- Ensure that safety training and protective equipment are available
- Monitor work areas to ensure it is completed in a safe manner
- Understand safety regulations related to their area of responsibility
- Direct / coordinate safety activities within their area of responsibility
- Enforce employee use of personal protective equipment and job safety devices
- Conduct safety inspections of the work area, direct corrective action for unsafe conditions, and inform the Safety Manager of inspection results
- Ensure that Supervisors under their direction comply with requirements for site safe practices
- Establish clear safety performance expectations for all personnel under their direct supervision, monitor performance to these expectations and provide meaningful feedback on performance.
- Require all subcontractors and subcontractor personnel to comply with applicable safety regulations
- Remove from the project, individuals or subcontractors who continually fail to meet safety expectations
- Establish regular meetings with personnel under their direct supervision to discuss safety planning, safety performance, and appropriate action planning to ensure safety goals are met. Monitor attendance, and provide feedback that ensures performance to expectations.
- Communicate the site's safety vision and commitment by:
- Attending safety meetings
- Making safety the first item on business meeting agendas
- Attending weekly contractor work meetings and ensuring that safety issues are discussed
- Maintain an environment where safety, quality, schedule, and cost are equally valued
- Participate in employee motivation programs
- Enforce job procedures
- Perform one (1) Behavior audit per day on the crews under your supervision
- Recognize and reward safe behavior
- Recognize and address "at risk" behaviors
