King County Road Services Division is seeking a Drainage Design Engineer (Engineer II) to join our dynamic and supportive team. - Perform watershed analysis and hydraulic modeling.
- Prepare hydrologic reports, geomorphic assessments, hydraulic analyses and modeling reports, construction plans, specifications, special provisions, and cost estimates.
- Ensure all designs comply with the King County Road Standards, King County Surface Water Design Manual, and applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Conduct field surveys to support fish passage project design and other roadway-related design projects.
- Provide technical expertise in CADD and Civil 3D, including troubleshooting and training, to develop engineering plans for fish passage, facilities, and roadway construction projects.
- Have a bachelors degree in civil engineering or a related field and can demonstrate knowledge and experience in engineering design and principles, including CADD, Civil 3D, HEC-RAS, and fish passage and drainage system designor possess any combination of education and experience necessary to perform the job duties.
- Have experience working effectively on a team and contributing to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity, where differences are respected and valued.
- Able to track progress, review and analyze construction projects and schedules, conduct field evaluations and reviews, and provide recommendations for project scope and construction costs.
- Can manage and prioritize a high volume of diverse projects and multiple competing tasks with strong attention to detail.
- Skilled at reading, interpreting, and developing engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates for road, bridge, and stream restoration construction.
- Able to handle politically sensitive issues with professionalism and discretion.
- Have knowledge of watershed analysis, field surveys, fish passage and drainage system design, and hydrologic and hydraulic design for open channels and storm drainage systems.
- Are proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Access, Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Project) and have skill using AutoCAD, GPS, and GIS software.
Additional Requirements
- Have a valid Washington State Drivers License
- Successfully pass a pre-employment physical
Desirable Requirements:
- A professional civil engineering license in the State of Washington
INTERVIEW SCHEDULE: First review of applications will take place the week of 6/30/2025. Those applicants who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in an interview the week of 7/7/2025.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS: This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical - Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed, suspended, or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical.

TELEWORKING REQUIREMENT: This is a hybrid position. The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking, onsite work and meetings as needed. The responsibilities of this position will include regular and ongoing in-office work. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
