POSITION TITLE: HVAC MECHANIC
DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE
REPORTS TO: MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
SUMMARY: Performs skilled heating, ventilation and air conditiong work on the maintenance, repair and renovation fo all school facilities and performs general maintenance work as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
- Receives oral or written orders from supervisor.
- Studies building plans, blueprints, diagrams or drawings to determine equipment, tools and materials required.
- Estimates time and material costs and orders material as needed.
- Assists in estimating major renovation jobs.
- Plans layout, installs and repairs all equipment related to the HVAC systems in all schools and recommends repair or replacement action to the supervisor.
- Establishes and carries out, on a regular basis, a preventative maintenance program for all the district HVAC equipment
- Assists in emergency maintenance operations.
- Follows all applicable safety procedures.
- Reports work accomplished orally and in writing to supervisor.
- Is available for work beyond regular ours and performs general maintenance work and all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
- Supervised by and receives general supervision from the Maintenance Foreman and the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
- Install and test new equipment.
- May be required to be on twenty-four (24) hour call.
- Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains an inventory of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Is available for work beyond regular hours and performs general maintenance work and all other duties as my be assigned.
- Coordinates work with building custodians, principals and teachers.
- Instructs custodians and other maintenance staff on the proper use of equipment.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY, AN INDIVIDUAL MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM EACH ESSENTIAL DUTY SATISFACTORILY. THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND/OR ABILITY REQUIRED. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
Must have five (5) years of experience in HVAC trade.
Must have experience in industrial, commercial refrigeration equipment.
Must have an S-2 license from the State of Connecticut.
Must be certified in refrigerant reclamation by the State of Connecticut.
Direct Digital Control experience a plus.
Connecticut Motor Vehicle License.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and other employees.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education Policies. Working knowledge of public building and structural design. Knowledge of building code conformance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally, the employee will lift heavier items and should do so with assistance. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
