Position Information:
Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades Supervisor in Facilities Services Maintenance department, the Lead Painter performs journey-level work related to preparing and painting walls, ceilings, floors, woodwork, stucco, and masonry for interior and exterior campus facilities. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence; acts as subject matter expert and provides leadership to team members. The Lead Painter will install, finish and patch/repair drywall and stucco walls. Applies paints, stains, and other topcoats and finishes with rollers, brushers and sprayers. Performs lead abatement on interior and exterior surfaces, metals, and woodwork. Responsible for following all safety procedures while performing tasks related to the painting trade; such as but not limited to preparation of areas prior to painting, mixing paints and applying paints to all types of surfaces. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all operating data, inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) performed . Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings, as needed. Reviews and updates all shop logs, both paper and electronic according to updates and changes. Leads and responds to emergency situations to mitigate and/or resolve immediate paint concerns or safety issues. Reviews and creates blueprints/drawings, and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate safety concerns. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

The full salary range for the Lead Painter is $41.67 - $46.92 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Knowledge and experience of the proper and safe usage for paints, solvents, chemicals common to the painting skilled trade. Knowledge and experience with colorants, paints, primers, solvents, patching compounds, sealers, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, and thinners. Knowledge and experience in safe and proper procedures with removal/abatement of lead based paint.
  • Skill in operating shop equipment and tools common to the skilled trade. Skilled use of power and hand tools related to maintenance/ painting including but not limited to rollers, brushes, airless and conventional sprayers, hammers, screwdrivers, sanders, scrapers, grinders, wall texturing machines, pressure washers, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and understand safety regulations and hazards. Knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected. Ability to estimate time, methods and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understanding documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, and provide exceptional customer service. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts, and boom trucks, or stages at varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds; ability to perform repetitive lifting, stooping, climbing, pushing, pulling, and reaching. Ability to lift, load, carry, move, and manipulate various building materials; ability to work in areas where noise levels may exceed 90 dB. Ability to withstand frequent exposure to extreme temperature conditions up to 125 degrees F(boiler rooms, steam pits, outdoor weather, etc.). Ability to follow safe precaution and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment and gear to safely perform physical requirements and duties.
  • Ability to work in confined and dusty spaces and wear respirator or other required safety gear. Ability to work outdoors in extreme and inclement weather conditions ranging from high heat with humidity, to freezing, rainy, and windy conditions. Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant sights and smells, dangerous and/or hazardous substances.
  • Ability to drive a van or pick-up truck and ability to safely work around moving vehicles, machinery, and equipment. Ability to follow safety precautions and utilize appropriate safety devices, equipment and gear to safely perform duties with exposure to environmental requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays. Ability to work occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.

    Prepares various surfaces (wood, metal, plaster, sheet rock, Vaughn wall, masonry, etc.) for painting including, but not limited to, washing, dewaxing, patching, plastering, caulking, taping, glazing, repairing, sanding and scraping; removes wall hangings, screws, wall anchors; repairs surfaces, removes old paint, fills holes/cracks/joints with putty, plaster and other fillers, in preparation of painting . Remove and install wall plates, as necessary for the painting . Applies paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, other topcoats and finishes with rollers, brushes and sprayers. Etches galvanized metal prior to priming . Performs body work, such as using automotive body fillers on various types of metal desks, cabinets, etc. Applies proper primers and flash bonds for priming metal surfaces. Removes old finishes with paint removers. Patches and sands wood cabinets and furniture. Mixes and blends penetrating lacquers and stains. Sprays lacquers, sanding sealers, oil sealers, polyurethane varnishes and other finishes (epoxy, alkyd, acrylic, enamel, Zolatone, etc.). Performs lead abatement, as necessary, to safely remove lead based paints from interior/exterior surfaces, while observing all government/University regulations, safety procedures and building codes.
    Removes graffiti from walls, sidewalks, dumpsters, and other university property. Prepares and finishes woodwork, including built-in cabinets/furniture, for painting/staining and help with blinds and carpet install. Installs minor finish carpentry such as trim, moldings and baseboard. Mixes paints by formulas and/or hand matching colors. Selects proper primers and finishes for each job. Utilizes the proper equipment including but not limited to rollers, spray guns/pumps, pressure pots, spray paint, high volume low pressure (HVLP) sprayer/airless and conventional paint sprayers.

  • Shop Lead &Administrative Duties:

    Leads, guides, clarifies instructions for the maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, modification and inspection of service requests. Acts as a subject matter expert. Makes recommendations on staff, equipment, materials and other sources of cost savings or efficiency improvements. Makes recommendations on work assignments based on individual skill sets. Trains new team members on campus systems, procedures and methods. Establishes and maintains a high level of professionalism that supports collaboration and problem solving while building strong working relationships with customers, supervisors, colleagues, contractors and campus partners. May perform job walks or scope work, as necessary; develops estimates for labor and material; take-offs, isometrics and drawings/plans in accordance with appropriate code requirements. Oversees the maintenance of tools and equipment; ensures the safe operation of equipment and safety procedures are followed when performing work. Provides administrative support by processing work order requests; prepares written documentation of work performed in a clear and concise manner. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence. May oversee work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with campus procedures and safety guidelines. Responds to customer complaints and requests for information. Works with customer and campus personnel to accurately define the nature of the problem, determine the appropriate course of action, make recommendations and follow up to ensure resolution has been effective.

  • Maintains and repairs equipment, sprayers, sanders, paint shakers, etc. maintains spray booth and paint spray equipment; inclusive of temporary peel-off
    coatings on walls and ceilings, applies paper floor in booth, as necessary. Collaborates with other skilled trades and Facilities Services team members to complete minor renovation projects and maintenance projects. Maintains knowledge of building and safety codes; understands paints, removers, solvents and chemicals knowledge common to the trade; and other environmental rules and regulations; hazardous material handling and disposal.

    materials/parts, such as colorants, primers, patching compounds, sealers, lacquers, enamels, epoxies, paint, painting supplies, and thinners. Performs computer input within the work order system for recording of labor and materials used in work performed; maintains clear and accurate documentation
    of all inspections, testing and maintenance performed. Updates equipment documentation, specifications and drawings as needed. Cleans truck/shop and maintains organization of materials and tools; performs routine maintenance or coordinates for repair or replacement of tools and equipment, as required. Accounts for shop parts/supplies inventory and reports supply needs to be restocked. Consults with supervisor and/or lead for technical information, as needed. Interprets prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements. Supports maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments.
