The Rayburn Energy Station is a natural gas-fired power plant with a nominal generation capacity of 750 megawatts (MW). The facility features a single set of two Siemens SGT6-5000F series combustion turbine generators (CTGs) operating in high-efficiency combined-cycle mode. In this configuration, the hot exhaust from each CTG flows into a dedicated Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), maximizing energy output through steam-driven power generation.

Opportunity Summary

The Shift Supervisor opportunity at Rayburn Energy Station offers a dynamic leadership role overseeing all aspects of plant operations, including equipment start-up, shutdown, alarm response, and performance optimization. This position ensures strict compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards while supporting team development through training, coaching, and policy implementation. The role is critical in maintaining plant reliability and customer satisfaction by leading off-shift operations, managing personnel, and driving continuous improvement initiatives.

Your scope of responsibility as Shift Supervisor includes the following primary functions:

  • Supervise plant operators and oversee all aspects of plant operations, including equipment operation, start-up, shutdown, and response to alarms.
  • Ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and adherence to safety and environmental standards.
  • Lead and support start-up and shutdown procedures during outages to minimize downtime.
  • Assume full responsibility for plant operations during off-shift hours.
  • Oversee the Operations Department to ensure customer satisfaction and uphold the plant’s reputation.
  • Enforce a strong safety culture by prioritizing adherence to all environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and protocols.
  • Administer all lockout/tagout procedures to safeguard personnel and equipment.
  • Supervise routine inspections and ensure compliance with environmental systems, including Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).
  • Promote and ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials and enforce good housekeeping practices across the facility.
  • Supervise and deliver training programs to ensure staff competency and compliance with plant procedures.
  • Implement new policies and procedures and ensure thorough communication of changes to all operations personnel.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and coaching to support employee development and performance improvement.
  • Attend Plant Management Meetings, participate in Safety Committee activities, and contribute to Plant Betterment Projects.
  • Directly supervise Operations Department staff in compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Plan, assign, and direct work to maximize team efficiency and productivity.
  • Regularly evaluate employee performance, provide constructive feedback, and recognize exceptional contributions.
  • Manage and implement disciplinary actions or rewards in alignment with company policies.
  • Address complaints and resolve conflicts promptly to maintain a collaborative and professional work environment.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records throughout the shift in accordance with plant policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Report all plant upset conditions to the Operations Manager and, during off-hours, notify the appropriate management personnel.
  • Ensure effective communication with staff and management regarding performance, operational issues, and procedural updates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and respond promptly to reasonable requests from the customer’s site management.

  • Conduct inspections and observations by establishing a regular inspection process for the work area and a safety observation process for ongoing work.
  • Lead these activities in accordance with any rules, requirements, or guidance established within your business unit, group, or division.

  • Analyze results, write work orders, and provide training and education to eliminate hazards, address at-risk behavior, and meet company regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct safety observation tours of high-risk activities (e.g., confined space) to verify that employees are following safe practices, company procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Hold one-on-one sessions with direct reports to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations, and coach safe behaviors.
  • Respond to all safety-related incidents, including injuries, incidents, and near misses; write a report explaining what happened, identify the cause, and recommend corrective actions based on established business unit or division practices. Follow up as necessary to ensure corrective actions are taken.

Working Relationships

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager depending on assigned duties.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The Shift Supervisor operates on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, ensuring continuous coverage and seamless transition between shifts. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.

Compensation

This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $44 to $60 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.

Job Qualifications

We are looking for a results-oriented supervisor with experience in the operations and maintenance of power generating facilities, coupled with a track record of leadership, career development, and operational success.

  • Associate degree in engineering or a technical field such as power plant technology, or equivalent, is desired, as it provides a strong foundation for understanding the technical aspects of power plant operations and management. Relevant industry or military experience may be considered in lieu of education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Extensive experience as a Control Room Operator in a power plant, demonstrating a strong understanding of plant operations and safety protocols.
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise teams, ensuring efficient plant performance and strict adherence to safety procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of power plant systems, equipment, and processes, supporting effective troubleshooting and sound decision-making.
  • Familiarity with environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations, with a track record of maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Proficient in maintaining accurate logs and records in accordance with plant policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Experienced in overseeing and assisting with start-up and shutdown procedures during plant outages to minimize downtime.
  • Capable of supervising training programs, implementing new policies and procedures, and effectively communicating changes to staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, fostering a collaborative and respectful work environment among team members.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
