The Opportunity
WSDOT South Central Region is seeking three (3) talented and innovative engineers to join their engineering team. These positions represent WSDOT as lead project inspectors overseeing and assisting the field engineer with many of the critical construction project inspection duties. These positions also act as a design team leader, coordinating and directing team members toward accomplishing the project goals. The employees will be directed by the Project Engineer, Assistant Project Engineer, or Field Engineer to assign and train other engineers, technicians, or GECs.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Transportation Engineer will:
- Monitor contract schedule and budget.
- Lead and/or work with survey crew in the layout of construction projects.
- Assist Field Engineer in planning and scheduling team members inspection activities.
- Train and mentor junior inspectors in the inspection procedures, contract standards, and other aspects relating to the construction duties and functions.
- Prepare contract field documents and records.
- Prepares and checks calculations for all pay notes, tickets, and invoices.
- Assure accurate and documented contract payments are made, material documentation is complete and accurate.
- Coordinate and communicate with field personnel, other WSDOT field offices, region offices, and Headquarter offices to expedite the proper preparation and approval of required documentation for construction projects.
- Work as Designer on design and Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) preparation team of engineers and technicians.
- Lead the junior team members and being responsible for the projects assigned.
Qualifications
Please note: This position has been approved for in-training. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on qualifications.
Required qualifications at the Transportation Engineer 1 level:
- Bachelors degree from an ABET accredited college or university with major study in civil engineering or a closely related field,
OR
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT)
Required qualification at the Transportation Engineer 2 level:
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent.
OR
- Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1 or equivalent.
OR
- Masters degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation, or a closely related field.
In addition to the above (applies to TE-1 and TE-2 :
- Valid drivers license.
- Ability to transport equipment/items weighing up to 40 pounds, over steep or uneven terrain.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and next to live traffic in closed roadway lanes.
- Must be able to perform mathematical calculations at or above a high school geometry level.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Software (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Ability to work for extended periods at a desk while preforming office functions.
- Experience using CAD or have the ability to learn to use CAD within six months of hiring.
- Ability to work all shifts, including evening, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
- Communicate complex concepts clearly and concisely both verbal and in writing.
- Ability to learn and then apply engineering concepts, principles, and WSDOT standards procedures to develop Plans, Specifications and Estimates and inspect and administer highway construction projects.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Experience in construction inspection, Design-Build Quality Verification, and/or materials testing.
- Experience field testing various construction materials such as concrete, aggregate, HMA, etc.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of InRoads.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of MicroStation.
- Certification as a Traffic Control Supervisor.

- These positions are approved for in-training. Candidates will be considered as a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on qualifications.
- In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2025, upon legislative approval.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
