The Flight Safety Manager is responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of Hampton University Safety Management System (SMS). The Flight Safety Manager reports directly to the Aviation Department Chair or School of Engineering, Architecture and Aviation if the Department Chair is also the designated Chief Pilot. This is a 12-month staff position.
Job Duties:
Safety Advocate
Demonstrates an excellent safety behavior and attitude, follows regulatory practices and rules, recognizes and Promotes hazard reporting and ensures effective safety reporting.
Acts as an information conduit to bring safety issues to the attention of management and to deliver safety information to the organization's staff, contractors and stakeholders.
Provides and articulates information regarding safety issues within the organization.
Development
Establishes operating goals, policies, and procedures for the aviation department according to The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) guidelines; recommends, implements, and administers methods and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency.
Assists in the continuous improvement of the hazard identification and safety risk assessment schemes and the organization's SMS.
Establish a Flight Simulator Training Program to ensure Operational Safety Adherence
Process Management
Effectively utilizes applicable processes and procedures to fulfill roles and responsibilities.
Investigates opportunities to increase the efficiency of processes.
Measures the effectiveness and seeks to continually improve the quality of processes.
Act independently of other managers within the university and Flight Training Contractor.
Job requires flexibility because assignments may undertake with little and no notice and outside normal work hours
Analyst
Conduct Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) Review of Data Recorders from Student Training Flights
Analyses technical data for trends related to hazards, events and occurrences. AABI Designated Safety Management Assessment Coordinator
Flight Simulator
Manages the departments flight simulator program
Conducts student flight safety/proficiency checks
Prepares newly rated CFI are prepared to flight instruct
Teaching
Variety of aviation and flight courses
Assist with coaching the University's Flight Team
Collaborate with colleagues in the Hampton University Air Traffic Control and Aviation Management programs
Work with the Flight Operations staff at the contracted airport.
The successful candidate will be expected to be the lead Aviation Flight Safety Manager responsible for providing guidance and direction for the planning, implementation and operation of Hampton University Safety Management System (SMS).
Qualifications:
Flight Safety Manager (FAA CFI Rating Required)
Bachelor Degree in Aviation or Master's Degree with experience in Aviation
SMS Course or equivalent qualification
Proven experience in the Aviation environment
Proven knowledge of Aviation Legislation and FAA Annexes
Proven exposure to Safety & Quality Assurances
General management -Budgeting, HR and Project Management
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software programs that go far beyond basic word processing. Work may involve the design and development of documents, spreadsheets, and graphic materials needed for internal and external presentations.
Proven knowledge in implementing and maintaining an aviation Safety Management program with appropriate Federal Aviation Administration certifications.
Proven exposure to Safety and Quality Assurances with knowledge of Aviation Legislation and FAA Annexes.
Additional FAA Flight ratings, as well as prior safety program and military aviation experience (fixed wing or rotary) are highly desirable.
Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate previous teaching experience at the university level.
