General Definition of Work

The roofer I, under general supervision, performs skill-based work with minimal decision-making discretion related to conducting roofing repairs on buildings and classrooms, occasionally in inclement weather. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry-out Board of Education policies under the direction of the roofing assistant supervisor.

Place of Work

The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.

Essential Functions

Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures

Keep roofs clean of debris and perform visual inspections to ensure roofs are watertight

Assist in preparing for the application of new roofing materials for maintenance and repair

Assist in installing and repairing roofs, flashings, and surfaces

Assist in the installation and maintenance roof drains, plumbing drainpipes, metal drain covers, stripping, and flashing

Assist in emergency leak repairs and maintenance processes and procedures on a variety roof types

Assists in setting up ladders, scaffolds, hoists, and other equipment

Assist with the installation of metal work on roofs

Unload materials and tools from work trucks as directed

Maintain tools and equipment in good working conditions

Remove snow from building entrances during inclement weather

Perform related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods used in the maintenance and repair of roofs

Knowledge of safety practices and procedures

Ability to ascend and descend ladders (up to 40 feet) frequently

Ability to work in extreme weather/temperatures

Ability to read and understand layout drawings of roof sections

Working knowledge of and ability to inspect all roof drains, roof areas holding water or ponding, and all materials that must be secured and/or fastened accurately

Ability to work flexible hours, including during non-business hours, as required by the flow of operations

Ability to learn basic sheet metal work related to flashing, etc.

Ability to learn how to use software programs such as MP2, roof manager, etc.

Ability to solve problems using critical thinking skills

Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media

Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes

Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders

Education and Experience

High School diploma or G.E.D.

0 to 1 year of roofing experience

Preferred apprenticeship in commercial roofing

Equivalent combination of education and experience

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain a District approved certification or state licensure and/ or various roofing product specific certification(s)

Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
