Audio Design Engineer - Hardware Development

This is a unique opportunity to rebuild and lead our newly relocated audio lab and deliver world-class audio performance in our telecommunications products.

This role is critical in ensuring our devices exceed industry standards and deliver the crystal-clear sound quality that defines the Avaya experience. The successful candidate will play a strategic role in developing, testing, and tuning audio systems across our digital, IP, and conference devices.

What Youll Do

Lead the rebuild and setup of our acoustic test lab (formerly in Ottawa, Canada)

Design and optimize audio systems for telephone endpoints including speakerphones, handsets, and headsets

Perform in-depth testing and tuning of:
- Legacy IP endpoints (J100/K series)
- Upcoming J200 series (J239, J279)
- Next-generation B199 conferencing system (OEM/ODM or in-house design)

Conduct competitor device benchmarking and comparative performance analysis

Support conceptual development of varied audio performance standards across device tiers (entry-level to premium)

Partner with our hardware designer and cross-functional teams to evaluate component selection and cost-saving opportunities

Document, analyze, and improve acoustic performance through iterations, supported by peer reviews and Atlassian Forge integration

Key Responsibilities

Operate acoustic testing platforms including Listen Inc. and HEAD Acoustics systems

Analyze test results according to TIA-920, ETSI ES 202 740, and Avaya internal standards

Develop and implement acoustic features across multiple interfaces: Bluetooth, DECT, handsfree, headset(s), and handsets

Review repeatability of prototype audio performance and influence early design improvements

Test 2nd source components and provide recommendations for acoustic compatibility

Ensure seamless documentation and test traceability across firmware and hardware updates

Required Experience

Experience with electronic audio circuits, acoustic transducers, and VoIP SoC devices

Deep understanding of audio performance standards and test methodologies (TIA, ETSI, IEEE Std 269)

Strong knowledge of spectral analysis, SNR, harmonic distortion measurements, and other diagnostic tools

Preferred Skills and Competencies

Audio path tuning: gain distribution, frequency shaping, noise reduction, and echo cancellation

Strong interpretation skills for acoustic test data and a continuous improvement mindset

Proficiency in VoIP networking protocols: IP, SIP, SSH, packet capture analysis, XML

Ability to collaborate across global teams and time zones

Self-driven and organized; able to manage multiple projects concurrently

The pay range for this opportunity is from $119,500 to $161,600 + bonus + benefits

This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the salary for this position. This role is also eligible to receive an annual bonus that aligns with individual and company performance. Actual salaries will vary and are based on factors such as a candidates qualifications, skills, competencies.
