MAJOR FUNCTION
Performs highly skilled work operating heavy-duty construction and earthmoving equipment, with a focus on finish grading to close tolerances. Ensures safe, efficient equipment use and may lead small field crews in grading, road building, or maintenance tasks.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Grading & Construction
- Finish grades road base materials, athletic fields, and drainage ditches using graders and bulldozers.
- Establishes and transfers grades from benchmarks; lays out roadways, parking lots, and other areas.
- Operates road grader to build roads, slope shoulders, blade drainage ditches, and complete grading to specifications.
- Operates hydraulic bulldozers and front-end loaders to clear land and transport materials.
Equipment Operation & Transportation
- Transports equipment using low-bed or other trailers.
- Loads and unloads vehicles and equipment; tractor-trailers operate in hauling tasks.
- Operates small vehicles or light equipment as needed.
- Performs routine pre-operational checks and preventive maintenance; makes minor field adjustments.
Leadership & Manual Labor
- May serve as crew leader for a small team of equipment operators and laborers.
- Performs general manual labor tasks as assigned.
- Completes other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Technical Proficiency
- Proficient in grading operations and construction layout.
- Skilled in operating heavy-duty equipment and large vehicles, including those with complex control systems.
- Knowledgeable in basic equipment maintenance practices.
Safety & Regulations
- Strong understanding of occupational hazards and applicable safety protocols.
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal traffic laws.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Able to lift 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally.
- Capable of using multi-hand/foot controls and performing tasks requiring eye-hand coordination.
- Must work in various weather and environmental conditions.
- Able to see, hear, bend, stoop, sit, stand, and drive between worksites.
Administrative & Cognitive Skills
- Reads and interprets blueprints.
- Performs basic math and written calculations.
- Use basic computer programs and a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Flexibility & Availability
- Willing to work varying schedules, including weekends and evenings.
- May be reassigned to alternate reporting locations for temporary assignments.
- Willing to assist with Natural Resources' operation and land management activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of three (3) years of experience performing finish grading tasks and operating heavy-duty earthmoving equipment, which includes at least one (1) year of lead experience in earthmoving or road-building projects.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida Commercial Class "A" driver's license at the time of application within this classification.
Must have Trenching & Excavation Competent Person certification in accordance with current OSHA regulations within six (6) months of hire.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications, with the exception of required licensure, training, and certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County.
