Position Summary

Under the guidance and direction of the department supervisor, group leader, or higher-rated operator, the Orbital Welding Operator is responsible for setting up and operating the orbital welding system to fabricate high-quality welded assemblies. This role requires interpreting blueprints and engineering sketches, developing welding parameters, preparing tubing and fittings, and assisting engineering with tooling development. The operator performs assembly, testing, inspection, and preventive maintenance tasks to ensure production efficiency and product quality while adhering to safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate the orbital welding system following established procedures and safety protocols.
  • Interpret blueprints, engineering sketches, and specifications to accurately complete welding assemblies.
  • Develop and adjust welding setup parameters for new or modified assemblies to optimize quality and efficiency.
  • Cut, prepare, and fit tubing and components used in the welding process.
  • Collaborate with engineering to assist in the design and fabrication of welding work holders, forming jigs, and tooling.
  • Assemble liquid delivery systems, install welds and valves, and perform helium leak testing to verify system integrity.
  • Assemble and calibrate electronic components as required for production units.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on the welding system to ensure optimal operation.
  • Inspect completed assemblies using borescope inspection systems to verify weld quality and compliance with specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and accurate records of work performed.
  • Follow all company safety regulations and procedures, including proper handling of welding equipment and compressed gases.
  • Perform additional assembly and testing operations as assigned, supporting both production units and engineering prototypes.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of orbital welding training program with certification or equivalent experience.
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in orbital welding or related fields.
  • Familiarity with calibration, assembly procedures, and use of electronic and measuring test equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and welding specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail with continuous mental and visual focus required for welding operations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate effectively with engineering and production teams.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and experience with preventive maintenance of welding equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to welding and handling of compressed gases.
  • Physical ability to perform light physical effort associated with the role.
  • Excellent organizational skills to maintain work records and clean work environment.
