The City's Development & Permits Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Plans Examiner II to join our Building Plan Review team. This role is ideal for a code-savvy professional who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment and is committed to ensuring safe and compliant construction practices.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Review residential and commercial building and site plans for compliance with building codes, accessibility standards, city ordinances, and other relevant laws and regulations.
- Interpret and apply a wide range of construction codes and permitting requirements.
- Utilize permitting software systems and tools, including Accela, Mainframe, GIS, Outlook, Adobe Pro, and other databases.
- Draft clear and professional correspondence, including review letters, emails, and voice messages.
- Communicate code requirements and plan review outcomes to contractors, design professionals, property owners, and the general public.
- Deliver high-quality customer service and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage multiple plan review projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining accuracy.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to other staff members as needed.
- Complete all state-required training and achieve applicable certifications within 18 months of hire.

Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS / LICENSES:
Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required such as State Plans Examiner (residential & commercial) Building Inspector, Fire Protection Plans Reviewer, Zoning Administrator, Permit Technician, and others as determined by Department needs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
ICC or State certification as a Building Plans Examiner and Residential Plans Examiner is preferred.
Prior experience reviewing commercial construction plans for compliance with applicable codes and regulations is also preferred.
