INTRODUCTION

This position is located in the District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG), Construction and Facilities Management Office (CFMO), District of Columbia Government Operations (DCGO). The mission of DCGO is to provide exceptional customer support to the DC National Guard, while serving the District and the community. "Working Together Towards Tomorrow".

The position functions as a Maintenance Mechanic Leader responsible for providing team leadership to all the Maintenance Mechanics and Maintenance Workers. The incumbent retrieves service requests and diagnoses problems; performs maintenance and repairs of all mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems as needed and or assigned; and ensures all service requests and repairs are made in a timely manner as well as clean debris from worksites.

MAJOR DUTIES

Works alone or as a member of a work crew. Plans work assignments based on general work orders/schedules, methods and establishes deadlines.

Monitors the maintenance work of technicians assigned to work assignments as directed by Foreman Supervisor and or Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor.

Plans and layouts work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Selects lumbar, materials, and supplies. Measures and cuts material to the required lengths and dimensions. Installs rafters, studs, still plates, braces, joists, floors, subfloors, panels (including sheetrock, plywood, and window frames, and interior and exterior trim. Installs structural and trim items by nailing, bolting, mortising, doweling, and gluing. Planes, sand, and finishes completed work when necessary. Installs sheet, roll, and shingle roofing insuring proper alignment and overlap. Fabricates and installs frames or casing for windows, doors, transoms, and ventilators, shelves, counters, plywood ductwork, bulletin boards, cabinets, bookcases, and related features and accurately aligned with other parts of the structure. Installs doors and window sashes. Trims, mortises, drills, and prepares items for attachment of hardware. Applies caulking compound or other filler material around door and window casings and at other points where tight seal is required. Fabricates concrete forms, scaffolds, storage pallets, storage bins, tables, work benches, and related items.

Performs semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.

Traces out short circuits in wiring, using meter. Tests electrical equipment or systems to ensure proper functioning. Disassembles defective electrical equipment, replace defective or worn parts, and reassemble equipment, using hand tools.

Plans and accomplishes work from initial layout to final assembly which involves interpreting and applying building plans, specifications, blueprints, sketches and other plumbing guides or codes. Determines the methods, techniques, materials, devices, and sequences best suited to do the work. Completes work by any of the accepted methods installations when blueprints and sketches do not provide or fail to show data to do the work. Plans and ensures the proper slant, slope, fall or level of installations to provide, for proper flow, drainage, and sanitary operating conditions and to prevent backflow, or air lock conditions.

Uses equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges dividers, closet augers, sewer rods, hydrostatic pumps, heating torches, basin strap. Spud, and flaring wrenches, and lead pots in the performance of duties.

Provides necessary assistance such as drawings, sketches, own knowledge of construction for Solar Heating/Cooling Units as required by the mechanical shop. Provides necessary technical guidance on construction of or installation of solar Heaters. Fabricates where necessary to provide proper slant, fall or level of installations to provide for proper flow, drainage, and sanitary operating conditions for successful operation of Solar Heaters and adjunct systems.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of basic shop mathematics, and be skilled in using measuring tapes, squares, levels, and other carpenter tools to plan, layout, measure, cut, construct and install materials according to dimensional requirements and specifications. The ability to work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints and instructions which are complete in terms of the type of job required and materials and methods to be used. Familiarity with and ability to operate tools of the carpentry trade, to include hammers, saws, and drills, both manual and electric. Ability to operate most types of motor vehicle equipment, including general purpose vehicles such as forklifts, mowers, sweepers, and other maintenance equipment. Ability to monitor job order status, work priorities, and converse and write in English.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

This position is classified as "Safety Sensitive" due to the position's duties and responsibilities.

This position is designated as "Essential" pursuant to Chapter 12 of personnel regulations, Hours of Work, Legal Holidays, and Leave.

Essential employees are required to report to and remain at work during emergencies and early closings. Emergencies include, but are not limited to snow, ice, wind, rain hurricanes, floods, acts of terrorism, fire, earthquakes, etc. This position will also require working overtime on special events, assignments, and drills.

This position is subject to emergency calls, seven (7) days a week, twenty-four (24) hours a day.

The incumbent of this position must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS

This position requires the incumbent to possess a valid driver's license.
